"Aren't you?"

"No." The word came fast, then slowed, as if he had to walk it back through honesty. "Not the way you mean. There is no woman in a hotel. There is no affair. There is—"

The phone vibrated again against Aisha's sternum. She flinched. The lock screen lit between them like a third person entering the room.

Layla: Dad I need you to pick up

Aisha stared at the name.

"Layla," she read aloud. The syllables felt wrong in their kitchen, as if the house itself rejected the sound. "Who is Layla?"

Darius closed his eyes. When he opened them, they were wet.

"My daughter," he said.

The kitchen seemed to tip. Aisha's free hand found the island edge. The gold robe's belt had loosened; she did not fix it. Ten years of shared toothpaste and shared taxes and shared grief rearranged themselves around a single noun.

"Your what."

"My daughter. She's fourteen. She lives in Dayton with her aunt now. Her mother — Keisha — died three weeks ago. Stroke. Sudden. I've been..." He gestured helplessly at the phone. "I've been trying to be there without bringing the wreckage into this house like I had a right to dump it on your floor at midnight."

Aisha laughed once — a short, incredulous sound that had no humor in it. "Three weeks. Her mother died three weeks ago, and you sat across from me at dinner talking about the neighbor's new fence."

"I know."

"You know." She held the phone up. "Open it. Unlock it. Now."

"Aisha—"

"Now."

He stepped closer. She did not pull away this time. He unlocked the phone with his thumb — Face ID, she saw, which meant he had arranged his face for this secret as carefully as he arranged his face for their marriage — and the message thread unspooled.

Aisha read.
