The room held the last word. Amara breathed against Marcus's chest, a small engine. Claire kept her eyes on the page.

"There's another," Marcus said.

"You can see there is."

"Read it."

The second letter was shorter. Claire's voice thinned.

"I sent a package. A book Naomi used to take out of my library even though she was not a resident of the county and I could have fined her. If it arrived, Amara can chew it. If it did not arrive, I would like to know where my mail is going in your house. I am not a threat to your marriage. I am a fact of your daughter's life. Please stop letting someone else file me."

"Did a package come?" Marcus asked.

Claire nodded once. "A board book. The duck one. I put it in the attic box. She was already attached to the bear."

"You put Naomi's book in the attic."

"I put a duplicate out of rotation. Children get attached to whatever you hand them. I handed her something that did not end with a woman disappearing."
