"Go turn on the hall light," he said. "The overhead. I want to see what I'm holding."

"Marcus."

"Please."

She went, because please from him was rare enough to function as a command. The hall light came on, white and unbecoming. It reached the bedroom and took the warmth out of the lamp. In that light the dresser looked like what it was: a piece of furniture with a history of hands on it, not a shrine and not a secret, only a place where people put what they could not decide to carry.

Marcus lifted the stack out with both hands and set it on the rug. Amara immediately tried to sit on it. He moved her, gently, onto his thigh. She leaned into his tie and grabbed the blue silk in a fist. He let her. The tie was not the point. The point was the weight of the paper, heavier than a few cards had any right to be, and the bracelet, and the blue sheet, and a small velvet box he did not remember owning in that color.

He opened the box.

Naomi's wedding band sat in the slit in the velvet, a plain gold circle that had lived, the last time he had knowingly touched it, in the ceramic dish on his nightstand. He had taken it off her hand at the funeral home because someone had said he should, and then he had not known what a widower did with a ring that was not his. For weeks it had been in the dish. He had assumed, when it vanished, that he had moved it to the lockbox at the bank in a responsible hour he had forgotten. He had been grateful to his imagined self for that competence.

"You had this," he said.

Claire stood in the doorway with her arms at her sides. The hall light made a rim on her hair.

"It was in a dish," she said. "For more than a month. Every morning it was the first thing I saw, and it was not mine, and you would not move it. I put it somewhere safe until you asked. You did not ask."
