He had a second alert from five-eleven. Simone coming through the front door. Simone stopping.

He had watched that one only once.

And then he had sat in the truck for eleven minutes, telling himself he was deciding how to handle it, which was a lie, because there was nothing to decide. What he was actually doing, if he was honest, was what he had been doing for years: waiting to see if it would blow over on its own. Waiting to see if Lorraine would figure it out. Waiting for something to happen that would spare him from being the person who said it.

Through the front window, past the edge of the curtain, he saw his wife cross the room fast and take hold of his daughter's arm.

Calvin got out of the truck.

He came through the front door still in his work jacket, the brown canvas one with the worn corduroy collar, mud drying gray on his boots. The door swung back against the wall. Everybody turned.

He took it in all at once: Simone in the middle of the room in her uniform, her face shining wet, her backpack turned inside out on the floor. Lorraine with her hand still half raised. The white pieces everywhere. Micah at the table, foot frozen mid-swing. And the bills, a fold of them sticking up out of the back pocket of Lorraine's slacks, a sticky note lying on the rug.

He did not have to ask what had happened. He had watched it happen. He had watched the first half from a construction site and the second half through a window and had walked in only now.

"Calvin," Lorraine said. Her voice cracked on it. "Look what she—look at my mother's—"

"Hold on," he said.

He lifted his phone and turned the screen toward her. His hand was steadier than he expected.

"Hold on, Lorraine. The camera by the door caught the whole thing."

For a moment nobody moved.

Then Calvin saw his son understand.
