"I know what day it is."

But she hadn't. That was the thing all four of them could hear, standing there. She hadn't known what day it was. She had been upstairs on a call with her headphones on, the noise-canceling ones Calvin had bought her last Christmas so she could work from home without hearing every cartoon, and she had come down and seen her daughter standing over the pieces and had not once, not for a single second, wondered when her daughter had come home.

"Micah," Lorraine said.

He was crying now. Soundless, the way he did when he was really scared rather than performing it—Calvin knew the difference, which was its own small indictment. His chest hitched. "I didn't say it was her," he said. "I didn't *say*."

"You nodded." Lorraine's voice was flat, strange. "I asked you if your sister did it and you nodded at me."

"I didn't *say*—"

"Go upstairs."

"Mommy—"

"Go upstairs, Micah. Right now. I can't." She pressed the back of her wrist against her mouth. "I can't."

He went. He went around the far side of the sofa, giving the shards and his sister a wide berth, and Calvin heard him on the stairs, and then the door of his room, not slammed, just closed, and then nothing.

That left the three of them.

Simone had not moved. She stood with her arms hanging, her tie askew, her cheeks drying in stiff streaks. Calvin wanted to say something to her. He had wanted to say something to her for years. He opened his mouth and found nothing in it that wasn't too small.

Lorraine reached into her back pocket.

She drew the bills out slowly. They had creased into the curve of her body. She held them for a moment, and Calvin saw that her hand was shaking, and then she held them out toward Simone, across the space between them, over the white dust on the rug.
