She turned, walked to her desk, pulled open the top drawer, and placed the brochure inside it. She closed the drawer.

She turned back around. Let me save you the embarrassment of looking at the numbers, she said.

I think what you really want is for me to show you something you can actually drive home today. The silence that followed lasted 4 seconds.

4 seconds in a marble showroom where the only sound was the faint hum of climate control and the distant click of a colleague's keyboard. A woman near the Ghost of display white mid-50s blazer and pearls looked up from her brochure.

She looked at Crystal. She looked at Edward.

She looked back at her brochure and did not turn the page. Darnell was 12 feet away.

He had heard every word. He set his tablet face down on the counter with a quiet, precise movement and turned toward the floor.

Edward's expression did not change. Not a muscle.

Gloria's expression did not change either, but her eyes had gone very still, the way eyes go still. When a person has made a decision.

"The extended wheelbase," Edward said again quietly, completely without inflection, just the words placed in the air like objects.

Crystal exhaled through her nose. She walked to her computer, opened a screen, and typed something with two fingers.

Then she turned the monitor slightly, not all the way toward Edward, just enough to imply she was being cooperative. I can pull up financing options.

The monthly on this configuration would run approximately $9,200. "Just so you're aware of what you're actually looking at."

She had not asked whether they wanted financing. She had not asked how they intended to pay.

She had simply announced publicly in a room with six other customers and two colleagues that the only realistic way these two people could own this car was through a payment plan, a payment plan she had already calculated for them without being asked.

Edward looked at the monitor. He looked at the number.

He looked at Crystal. He said nothing.

But Gloria turned her head slowly toward Crystal with an expression so composed, so precisely calibrated that it was more devastating than anger would have been. Crystal felt it.

She covered it by typing something unnecessary. That was when Crystal turned to Mike at the adjacent desk and said it not in a whisper, not as an aside, but at full conversational volume.

The way people speak when they want to be overheard without being held accountable for being overheard. Can you believe this?

They probably thought this was a Kia dealership. Mike didn't laugh.

He looked at his screen. Nobody laughed.

The woman near the Ghost display set her brochure flat on the hood of the car. She reached into her handbag.

She took out her phone. Darnell took three steps onto the floor.

He walked across the marble past the Wraith, past the cullinan, and stopped beside Edward Washington with the clean, direct posture of someone who had decided which side of something they were standing on. Sir, ma'am, my name is Darnell.

I'd be happy to walk you through the Phantom extended wheelbase, everything, start to finish. Crystal looked up from her computer.

The showroom was very quiet, and Edward Washington, for the first time since walking through those glass doors, allowed himself the smallest possible smile. Darnell walked them to the platform.

He moved with the quiet confidence of someone who had made a decision and was no longer second-guessing it.

He stepped up onto the raised floor beside the Phantom extended wheelbase, turned to face Edward and Gloria, and began the way he had been trained with the car itself, not the price. "This is the extended wheelbase configuration."

"Obsidian exterior, which is one of 17 bespoke color options. The wheelbase runs about eight inches longer than the standard Phantom."

"Most of that goes into rear passenger space. Rolls-Royce calls it the viewing suite."

"That's not marketing language. Step around to the rear and I'll show you why."

Edward followed. Gloria followed.

They moved around the car the way people move when they are genuinely interested. Slowly pausing, looking.

Gloria ran her fingers along the rear quarter panel. This time, nobody stopped her.

Darnell opened the rear passenger door. The interior unfolded cream leather hand-stitched in a double diamond pattern.

A foldout cocktail table in burled walnut. Individual reading lights recessed into the headliner above each seat.

The ceiling, the starlight option, 1,344 individual fiber-optic lights, hand-woven into the leather, each one placed by hand over 3 hours of labor. Gloria looked at the ceiling and was quiet for a moment.

"Edward," she said softly. He looked.

He nodded once, that was all. Darnell stood back and gave them the space to simply be inside the moment.

He had learned in three months that the best thing a salesperson could do sometimes was nothing. That was when Crystal arrived.

She came from across the floor with Mike half a step behind her and inserted herself between Darnell and the car with the smooth, practiced movement of someone who had done it before. "Darnell."

Her voice was pleasant on the surface and made of something harder underneath. "I'll take it from here."

"Why don't you go check on the couple by the Cullinan?" Darnell didn't move.

"They came to me. They're on my floor."

Crystal smiled at Edward and Gloria without warmth. I apologize for the confusion.

Let me get you properly taken care of. Edward looked at Darnell.

Darnell looked at Edward. A half second passed between them.

The kind of communication that doesn't require words.

"We're fine where we are," Edward said.

Crystal's smile held, but her eyes changed.

She turned back to Darnell with a look that said, "This conversation would continue later and it would not be pleasant."

Then she addressed Edward directly as though Darnell had become invisible.

"Sir, I want to make sure you have all the information you need to make a realistic decision today."
