When it ended, Derek's regional director had said four things.

"Confirm the ownership. Verify the card."

"Do not let them leave. Call me back in 10 minutes."

Derek walked back onto the floor. Crystal was still beside the Phantom.

She had not moved the card. She was looking at it with an expression that hadn't fully resolved yet.

She recognized the name Washington but hadn't connected it the way you recognize a word in a foreign language without knowing what it means.

"Crystal," Derek said.

"My office."

She looked at him. Something in his tone reached her before the words did.

"I'm with clients now."

She followed him. The door closed through the glass.

The conversation lasted 3 minutes.

Anyone watching could track it by Derek's posture, the way he turned his laptop screen toward her, the way her hand came up to her mouth, the way she sat down in the chair without being asked, without meaning to because her legs made the decision before she did.

Darnell was standing near the coffee station. He had come back out of the office when he heard the room go quiet.

He had seen the card placed on the hood. He hadn't been able to read it from where he stood, but he had watched Derek's face when Derek read it, and that had been enough.

He walked across the floor to Edward and Gloria.

"Can I get you anything? Water? Coffee?"

"Sit down, son," Edward said.

Darnell blinked. Edward gestured to the rear seat of the Phantom, the door still open, the cream interior, the starlight ceiling.

Darnell looked at it. He sat down carefully like someone sitting in something sacred.

Edward leaned against the car beside the door. Gloria stood on his other side.

"You knew this could cost you something," Edward said.

"When you walked across that floor the first time, you knew."

Darnell was quiet for a moment.

"Yes, sir."

"And you did it anyway."

"Yes, sir."

Edward nodded slowly. The same nod Gloria used when something was exactly right.

"That's the only thing I ever needed to know about you."

Gloria looked at Darnell with the specific warmth of a woman who had spent 31 years recognizing young people who were going to be something. She had seen it hundreds of times across a classroom, across a gymnasium, across a graduation stage.

She was seeing it now.

"Where did you go to school?" she asked.

"Georgia State. Business."

"Good school," she said.

"What do you want to do?"

Darnell looked at the showroom, the marble, the light, the cars on their platforms. He thought about the answer carefully.

"I want to build something," he said finally.

"I don't know exactly what yet, but something real, something that lasts."

Gloria smiled. It was the first full smile anyone in this showroom had seen from her all morning.

"Edward said the exact same thing when he was 24."

The glass door to Derek's office opened. Crystal walked out first.

She moved across the floor without looking at anyone. Not at Darnell, not at the customers, not at the woman near the Ghost display who was still holding her phone.

She collected her handbag from her desk drawer. She picked up her keys.

She walked to the front entrance. She stopped once just before the doors and turned back toward the showroom.

She looked at Edward Washington standing beside the most expensive car on the floor with his father's old watch on his wrist and a card bearing his name still sitting on the hood. She opened her mouth.

She closed it. She walked out.

The door slid shut behind her. Derek crossed the floor toward Edward with his hand already extended, his face carrying the specific expression of a man who understood that an apology was both necessary and insufficient and who had decided to begin with it anyway.

"Mr. Washington, I am deeply, genuinely sorry for what happened here today."

Edward looked at Derek's outstretched hand. He let a moment pass.

Then he shook it.

"We'd like to purchase the Phantom," Edward said.

"The one on the platform. This configuration."

"Today."
