She tried Italian; he answered in Italian.Her expression changed. One of her colleagues jokingly asked him something in Portuguese; he responded without hesitation. Then, Katerina tested his Mandarin; Andre answered that, too.By now, the entire table was silent. He could have humiliated her. He could have repeated her insults in front of everyone. Katerina couldn't understand why someone with those abilities was serving tables. The manager explained that Andre had family responsibilities—a sick mother and a little girl he was raising alone—and had never been able to pursue his original career.Katerina left the restaurant that night thinking about him, but Andre didn't think he would ever see her again.Three weeks later, Katerina returned. This time, she wasn't there for dinner; she walked directly to the restaurant manager and asked for Andre.He approached nervously. Katerina explained that her company was preparing for a major international conference involving executives from Germany, France, Italy, Brazil, China, and several other countries. Their professional interpreter had unexpectedly withdrawn from the event; she wanted to know if Andre would consider helping.Andre thought she was joking. He reminded her that he was a waiter, not a professional conference interpreter. Katerina told him that she had researched his qualifications.
