Silence.
Vanessa regretted the words immediately.
“Sorry.”
Kelly said nothing.
Vanessa rubbed her forehead.
“I’m just overwhelmed.”
“I know.”
“They arrested me over nothing.”
Kelly did not answer.
Vanessa stopped moving.
“What?”
“I didn’t say anything.”
“You didn’t agree.”
“Vanessa.”
“Did you think they should arrest me?”
“I think you should have left when Daniel told you to leave.”
The sentence landed harder because Kelly said it softly.
Vanessa stared through the kitchen window.
“You’re taking his side.”
“I’m not taking anybody’s side.”
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“Then you saw how he treated me.”
“I saw him ask you to leave.”
“For no reason.”
Kelly exhaled.
“You were screaming.”
“I was upset.”
“You were screaming at Emily.”
“She was disrespectful.”
“She told you she couldn’t give you another drink.”
“Exactly.”
Kelly went quiet.
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
“You know how much money I’ve spent there.”
Kelly did not respond.
“Kelly?”
“I know.”
“And?”
“And I don’t think that means they have to keep serving you.”
Vanessa gripped the edge of the counter.
“I cannot believe this.”
“I’m your friend.”
“Doesn’t sound like it.”
“That’s exactly why I’m telling you.”
Vanessa hung up.
Five minutes later, she regretted that too.
By Monday morning, the video had begun spreading.
Not nationally.
Not yet.
But locally.
A thirty-two-second clip showed Vanessa pointing at Deputy Mercer beside the pool.
The caption read:
WHEN THE VIP WRISTBAND DOESN’T INCLUDE OWNERSHIP OF THE HOTEL.
Someone had edited the clip so that the moment Vanessa raised her wristband repeated three times.
Another video showed her yelling that she had spent thousands of dollars at the property.
A third captured part of the arrest.
Vanessa watched all three.
Then she made herself stop.
At noon, her attorney called.
“Do not post.”
“I haven’t.”
“Do not comment.”
“I haven’t.”
“Do not contact the hotel.”
“I wasn’t going to.”
“Do not contact the deputies.”
