Ethan pointed through the window.
“Can we go there again someday?”
Vanessa looked toward the pool area.
She could not see the bar from the road.
But she remembered exactly where it was.
“Maybe.”
Sophie laughed from the back seat.
“Mom’s banned.”
“I am not banned forever.”
“How long?”
Vanessa glanced in the mirror.
“Long enough.”
Ethan looked confused.
“What did you do?”
Sophie opened her mouth.
Vanessa immediately said, “No.”
Sophie grinned.
“What?”
“I am telling him myself when he’s older.”
Ethan leaned forward.
“Did you break something?”
“No.”
“Did you steal?”
“No.”
“Did you fight somebody?”
Vanessa hesitated.
Sophie started laughing.
“Mom!”
“I did not fight anyone.”
“You fought everybody with words.”
Vanessa groaned.
“That is unfortunately accurate.”
Ethan looked fascinated.
“What did you say?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No chance.”
Sophie laughed harder.
The traffic light ahead turned red.
Vanessa stopped.
To her right, beyond the line of palm trees, she could see the top of the hotel sign.
BLUE HARBOR RESORT.
For months, seeing the name had triggered the same combination of shame and anger.
Now she mostly felt distance.
The strange thing about consequences was that eventually they became history.
Not erased.
Not excused.
But placed somewhere behind you.
Vanessa touched the steering wheel.
The light remained red.
Ethan was talking about something in the back seat.
Sophie was correcting him.
Vanessa listened.
Then she looked toward the hotel one more time.
She remembered that Saturday with painful clarity.
The sun.
The wristband.
The bartender.
Daniel.
The deputies.
Her own voice repeating the same sentence as if money were a spell powerful enough to change reality.
I spent thousands here.
At the time, Vanessa had believed the sentence explained everything.
Now she understood that it explained nothing.
The light turned green.
The car behind her waited.
Vanessa drove forward.
She did not look back.
