“Theirs.”
“Whose money?”
Karen paused.
“Well, technically customers gave it to them.”
Daniel looked at the cash in her hand.
“Is that the money?”
Karen looked down.
“Yes, but I'm holding it until this is resolved.”
Daniel's expression changed very slightly.
“Who asked you to hold it?”
“Nobody had to ask me.”
“That wasn't my question.”
Karen shifted her weight.
“No one.”
Daniel nodded once.
“So you removed money from the children's jar.”
“I secured it.”
“Did they give you permission?”
“No.”
“Did their mother?”
“No, but—”
“Did the property owner?”
Karen looked toward Maya.
“No.”
Daniel wrote something in a small notebook.
Karen's voice became sharper.
“Officer, you are ignoring the fact that they're selling things illegally.”
Daniel looked at the lemonade table.
“Do you know which ordinance they're violating?”
Karen stared.
“That is your job.”
“It can be. I'm asking what you reported.”
“I told dispatch they're running a business.”
Daniel nodded.
“Anything else?”
“The boy became hostile.”
Malik spoke.
“I didn't.”
Daniel looked toward him.
“I'll hear from you in a minute.”
Malik nodded.
The fact that Daniel said in a minute instead of don't interrupt settled him slightly.
Daniel turned back to Karen.
“You mentioned a disturbance?”
“Yes.”
“What disturbance?”
“This.”
Karen gestured broadly at everything.
Daniel waited.
Karen seemed surprised that the gesture did not complete the explanation.
He asked, “Was anyone fighting?”
“No.”
“Threatening anyone?”
“He argued with me.”
“Did he threaten you?”
Karen hesitated.
“No.”
“Did anyone damage your property?”
“No.”
Daniel nodded.
“Okay.”
Then he looked at Maya.
“Your turn.”
Maya explained the lemonade stand.
She explained the fundraiser.
She explained that the children were entirely on her property.
Then she described Karen approaching, demanding they stop, taking the money, and calling police.
Daniel looked at the children.
“Malik?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Tell me what happened. Start from when Ms. Whitmore arrived.”
Malik did.
He spoke more slowly than Karen.
He described the questions.
The argument.
The money jar.
How he had grabbed the opposite side when Karen picked it up.
How he let go.
How Karen removed the bills.
Daniel asked, “Did you touch her body at any point?”
“No.”
“Threaten her?”
“No.”
“Call her names?”
Malik almost smiled.
“No.”
“Did she say she was taking the money permanently?”
“She said she was holding it.”
Daniel nodded.
“Nia?”
Nia told the same story.
Aaliyah did too.
Karen folded her arms.
“They're children. They planned what to say.”
Maya's eyes narrowed.
Daniel looked toward Karen.
“Did you see them planning anything?”
“No.”
“Then that's speculation.”
Karen's face flushed.
Maya said nothing.
Daniel looked toward the doorbell.
“That camera work?”
Maya nodded.
“Yes.”
Karen immediately said, “A doorbell camera is pointed at the porch. It probably didn't capture anything.”
Maya looked at her.
“You seemed less certain before the officer asked.”
Karen ignored her.
Daniel turned toward Maya.
“Can you access the recording?”
“Yes.”
“Would you be willing to show me?”
“Absolutely.”
Maya opened the security application on her phone.
The Carter doorbell camera had a wide field of view.
It covered the porch, most of the front lawn, sidewalk, driveway edge, and the exact location of the lemonade table.
Maya selected the time.
11:58 a.m.
Daniel watched.
Karen arrived.
The children remained behind the stand.
No shouting.
No running.
No confrontation.
Karen spoke.
The audio was surprisingly clear.
“What is this?”
“Lemonade.”
Daniel kept watching.
Karen demanded permission.
Malik explained the fundraiser.
Karen ordered them to shut down.
Then came the moment.
Karen reached across the table.
Removed the jar.
Malik's hand touched the opposite side.
He released it almost immediately.
Karen removed the money.
Nia said, “Give it back.”
Then Karen said:
“I’m holding it until this is sorted out.”
Daniel paused the video.
He looked at Karen.
Karen said quickly, “Exactly. I said I was holding it.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“So that's not theft.”
Daniel did not take the bait.
Instead he said, “Put the money back in the jar.”
Karen stared at him.
“What?”
“Put the money back.”
“You haven't even checked whether the stand is legal.”
“I can check regulations separately. The children having a lemonade stand does not give you permission to take their cash.”
“I was preserving evidence.”
Daniel looked at the fourteen dollars.
“Evidence of what?”
“Illegal sales.”
“Did dispatch tell you to collect evidence?”
“No.”
“Did any officer?”
“No.”
“Did anyone from code enforcement?”
“No.”
Daniel pointed toward the jar.
“Return it.”
Karen's face hardened.
“This is unbelievable.”
Daniel waited.
Karen slowly walked toward the table.
She placed the folded bills into the jar.
Nia immediately reached toward it.
Maya gently stopped her.
“Count it first.”
Malik understood.
He removed the bills.
Five.
Five.
One.
One.
One.
One.
