An injured person deserved it too.

Yet being told she “barely exercised” landed directly on the insecurity she had been fighting since surgery.

Emily looked down.

Vanessa saw it.

Perhaps she believed she had won.

She reached for Emily’s towel again and shoved it farther down the bench.

“Come on. Up.”

Emily remained seated.

Vanessa placed a hand on the machine backrest.

“Get up.”

A male voice came from behind her.

“Take your hand off the machine.”

Vanessa turned.

Daniel Brooks stood six feet away.

Forty-five.

Broad-shouldered.

Black polo with DESERT PEAK FITNESS — MANAGER embroidered over the chest.

Gray athletic pants.

Short brown hair beginning to gray near the temples.

Daniel had managed the gym for almost nine years.

His expression was calm.

Not friendly.

Vanessa relaxed slightly when she recognized him.

“Daniel, good.”

He approached.

“What’s happening?”

Vanessa pointed toward Emily.

“She’s been monopolizing this machine.”

Emily opened her mouth.

Daniel raised one hand gently toward her.

“I’ll hear both sides.”

Vanessa continued anyway.

“She’s sitting here doing practically nothing. I asked how many sets she had. She said one. That was ages ago.”

Emily looked at the wall clock.

It had been perhaps four minutes.

Vanessa gestured toward the machine.

“She refuses to move.”

Daniel looked at Emily.

“Emily?”

Vanessa interrupted.

“She also got aggressive.”

Daniel’s eyes returned to Vanessa.

“I said I’ll hear both sides.”

Vanessa went quiet.

Emily swallowed.

“I have the rehab reservation until 2:20.”

Daniel looked toward the laminated card.

2:00–2:20.

The clock showed 2:17.

Emily continued.

“I’m doing my last set. She moved my towel and then pulled the seat adjustment while my leg was still in the machine.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

He looked at Vanessa.

“You adjusted the machine while she was seated?”

“I barely moved it.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Vanessa hesitated.

“I wanted her to understand she was finished.”

Daniel stared.

“You physically adjusted equipment while an injured member was using it?”

“She wasn’t exercising at that exact second.”

Emily said:

“I was resting.”

Vanessa snapped:

“I know what you claim.”

Daniel stepped between them.

“Vanessa.”

She turned.

“That’s enough.”

Her eyebrows lifted.

“Excuse me?”

Daniel pointed to the rehabilitation card.

“This machine is reserved for Emily until 2:20.”

“I pay for access to every machine.”

“So does she.”

“I’m premium.”

“That changes towel service and guest privileges. It does not cancel medical reservations.”

Vanessa laughed.

“You cannot be serious.”

“I’m completely serious.”

“She’s taking twenty minutes to do what should take five.”

Daniel looked at Emily’s rehabilitation sheet clipped to the machine.

Low resistance.

Controlled tempo.

Rest intervals.

Then back at Vanessa.

“She is following the program supplied by our rehabilitation partner.”

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“So now this is a hospital?”

“No.”

Daniel’s voice remained calm.

“It’s a gym that agreed to reserve three machines during specific hours for rehabilitation patients.”

“I didn’t agree to that.”

“You weren’t asked.”

The man at the cable station smiled.

Vanessa noticed.

Her face reddened.

“I have supported this business for seven years.”

Daniel nodded.

“And we appreciate your membership.”

“Apparently not.”

“Appreciating your membership does not mean allowing you to interfere with someone else’s.”

Vanessa pointed at Emily.

“She could have simply gotten up.”

Daniel looked at her.

“She shouldn’t have to.”

“It’s one machine.”

“Exactly.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“So you're choosing her over me.”

Daniel sighed.

“This is not high school.”

Emily looked away to hide a small smile.

Daniel continued.

“I’m enforcing a reservation.”

Vanessa glanced around.

More people were watching now.

The entire interaction had become public.

That appeared to matter deeply to her.

She straightened.

“Fine. Then I’m making a formal complaint.”

Daniel nodded.

“You can.”

“Against her.”

“No.”

Vanessa stared.

“What?”

“Against me if you want.”

“She was rude.”

Daniel looked at Emily.

“What did she say?”

Emily hesitated.

“I told her not to touch the machine.”

Daniel looked back at Vanessa.

“That sounds reasonable.”

Vanessa’s voice rose.

“She was disrespectful.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“Vanessa, stop.”

The gym became quieter.

“You’re embarrassing yourself.”

Her mouth fell open.

“You do not speak to members like that.”

“I generally don't have members attempt to move rehabilitation equipment while somebody recovering from surgery is sitting in it.”

“It was an adjustment lever.”

“That could have injured her.”

“Oh, please.”

Daniel stared at her.

That dismissive phrase seemed to make his final decision.

He walked toward the nearby computer terminal.

Vanessa frowned.

“What are you doing?”

Daniel logged in.

“Pulling up your account.”

Her expression relaxed again.

“Good. Look at how long I’ve been here.”

“I know how long.”

He clicked.

Paused.

His eyes moved across the screen.

Then back toward Vanessa.

“Actually, this makes today easier.”

Vanessa’s confidence faltered.

“What does?”

Daniel turned the monitor slightly away from the public.

He did not need anyone seeing private account information.

“March 3.”

Vanessa frowned.

“What?”

“Complaint from a member who said you removed her water bottle from a bench because you wanted the station.”

“That was resolved.”

“March 19.”

She went still.

“Another member reported you yelling at him for using two dumbbells you wanted.”

“He was sitting around.”

“April 6.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

Daniel continued.

“Staff warning after you confronted a woman in the stretching area and told her she was taking too much space.”

“That is not what happened.”

“You signed the conduct acknowledgment.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Those were misunderstandings.”

Daniel nodded.

“Each individually, perhaps.”

He looked toward Emily.

“Today is the fourth documented incident.”

Vanessa became very quiet.

Emily watched.

She had expected Daniel to protect the reservation.

Nothing more.

Daniel turned back.

“Your account was already flagged for final review after another conduct complaint.”

Vanessa glanced around.

The people nearby pretended not to listen.

They were absolutely listening.

“You’re threatening me now?”

“No.”

Daniel closed the account page.

“I’m informing you.”

“Informing me of what?”

Daniel folded his arms.

“Your membership is suspended effective immediately.”

Silence.

Vanessa blinked.

“What?”

“Thirty-day suspension pending final conduct review.”

She laughed.

Nobody joined her.

“You cannot suspend me.”

“I can.”

“I’ve paid through the year.”

“Unused prepaid membership will be handled under the agreement.”

“This is insane.”

Daniel remained still.

“You touched rehabilitation equipment while an injured member was using it after she told you not to.”

“I adjusted a seat.”

“You attempted to force her off a reserved machine.”

“She was hogging it!”

Daniel pointed toward the card.

“She was three minutes from the end of a reservation.”

Vanessa turned toward Emily.

“This is your fault.”

Daniel immediately stepped between them.

“No.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Do not speak to her again.”

“Are you serious?”

“Yes.”

“I want the owner.”

Daniel nodded.

“I can provide his email.”

“Call him.”

“He’s traveling.”

“Then call him.”

“No.”

Vanessa stared.

“Daniel, I know him personally.”

“I know.”

That response bothered her.

“You think he’s going to be okay with you throwing out a seven-year member?”

Daniel took out his phone.

“I spoke with him about your account last week.”

The color disappeared from Vanessa’s face.

“What?”

“You had already received three conduct complaints.”

“You discussed me?”

“We discussed whether another violation would result in suspension.”

Emily slowly removed her right leg from beneath the machine pad.

Her exercise session was technically finished.

She wanted to leave.

But standing while everyone watched suddenly felt impossible.

Daniel noticed.

He softened his voice.

“Emily, stay seated as long as you need.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Daniel turned.

“Vanessa, get your belongings.”

Her eyes flashed.

“You’re kicking me out?”

“Yes.”

“For asking for a machine?”

“No.”

“For repeatedly harassing members and physically interfering with equipment while someone recovering from surgery was using it.”

“You’re exaggerating.”

“Security cameras will show exactly what happened.”

Vanessa looked toward the ceiling.

Camera.
