Arthur crossed the room in three steps and pulled her into a hug—the kind that said everything words could not. "Told you, the truth doesn't disappear," he murmured into her shoulder.

Thornton cleared his throat from behind the counter. "Miss Hale, I owe you an apology. Procedure had my hands tied; should have trusted my gut sooner."

"You were just doing your job," Vivian said.

"Doing my job almost cost you the biggest day of your life," Thornton said. "Go on, get out of here. Community Cup starts in five hours."

Ruth caught Vivian's hand as she headed for the door. "We're not done yet," Ruth said. "Whoever paid those two boys didn't do it out of nowhere."

"I think we both know who," Vivian said quietly.

"Knowing and proving are different things," Ruth said. "But we're close. Closer than we've ever been."

Vivian squeezed her hand. "Thank you for not sleeping last night."

"Wasn't going to sleep anyway," Ruth said. "Not while somebody was trying to make a liar out of one of mine."

Across town, Marcus Webb sat in his car outside Colton Elite Performance. He stared at the building he had worked in for three years. His phone buzzed: a text from Delia. Story's ready. Waiting on you.

Marcus sat with that message for a long moment, hands tight on the steering wheel. Then he stepped out and walked inside—not toward the training floor, but toward Derek's office at the back.

Derek looked up from his phone, already dressed for the Community Cup, his gym bag packed by the door. "Hey, Coach. Big day."

"Bigger than you know," Marcus said. "We need to talk before you get anywhere near that gym floor."

"What's this about?" Derek asked, setting his phone down.

Marcus closed the office door behind him. "Five years ago," Marcus said. "A regional qualifier. You were nineteen. Do you remember a competitor named Vivian Hale?"

Derek's face shifted, something flickering behind his eyes. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said, though his voice wavered.

"I think you do," Marcus said. "I think you've known this whole week. I think that's exactly why you challenged her instead of walking away."

Derek said nothing.

"You threw an illegal strike that day," Marcus continued. "Aimed high, above the legal zone. She stepped in front of a younger teammate to block it. Ended her career on the spot."

"That was an accident," Derek said, quieter now.

"Was the drug test an accident, too?" Marcus asked. "Or did your father pay to make that disappear, too?"

Derek's jaw tightened the same way it always did right before he lost control. "You don't know what you're talking about," he said, his voice losing its earlier confidence.

"I coached you for three years," Marcus said. "I know exactly what I'm talking about. In about an hour, so will everyone else in this town."
