But something about today feels different. Something about the weight of that fist stopping inches from Walter's face, the way her body reacted before her mind even caught up... it has cracked something open. Something she is not sure she can close again.

The next morning, Richard Colton himself pays a visit to the dojang. He arrives in a car that costs more than most homes in Maple Hollow. He finds Arthur sweeping the front steps. He greets him with a smile that never quite reaches his eyes—the same kind his son wears.

"Arthur," Richard says warmly, extending a hand. "It has been too long."

Arthur shakes his hand out of politeness, nothing more. "Richard. I assume this isn't a social visit."

"Straight to business, then," Richard says. He glances around at the building with an appraising eye. "I'll make this simple: I am prepared to offer you double what this property is worth. Enough to retire comfortably. Enough for Vivian and her boy to never worry about money again."

"This property is not for sale," Arthur says calmly.

Richard's smile tightens. "Arthur, be reasonable. This town is changing. People want modern facilities. Nobody is signing up for a dusty old dojang—not when there are gyms with smoothie bars just twenty minutes away."

"Then let them go to those gyms," Arthur says. "This place was never about competing with anyone. It is about people like Walter and Ruth and a dozen others—people who have nowhere else that treats them like they still matter."

Richard's expression hardens slightly. "The town council meets in six days, Arthur. My proposal is already on the table. If you will not sell willingly, there are other ways this gets resolved."

"Meaning what, exactly?" Arthur presses.

"Meaning old buildings rarely pass every inspection they should," Richard says. He glances up at the sagging roofline above the entrance. "It would be a shame if the county found a reason to shut you down before the council even gets a chance to vote."

Arthur meets his gaze without flinching. "Are you threatening me, Richard?"

"I am simply telling you how business works," Richard says. He straightens his jacket. "You have six days to reconsider. After that, this may no longer be entirely in your hands."

He turns to walk back toward his car. That is when Vivian's sedan pulls into the lot, tires crunching over gravel. Richard pauses, watching her step out. Recognition flickers across his face.

"You must be the daughter. I saw the video this morning. Quite the party trick."

"It wasn't a trick," Vivian says evenly, walking past him toward the steps.

"No, I suppose it wasn't," Richard says. He studies her a moment longer than feels comfortable. "My son can be careless. I apologize for that. But careless or not, the offer stands. It is a generous one."

"This isn't your property," Vivian says. "It's my father's. It's Grace's. It belongs to everyone who walks through that door just to feel steady on their own two feet."

Richard's smile thins. "Sentiment doesn't pay property taxes, Miss Hale."

"Neither does bulldozing the one place that treats old people like they matter," Vivian says. "You might want to think about that before your next offer."

For a moment, something almost like respect crosses Richard's face, quickly buried under practiced composure. "You have your father's stubbornness. I hope it serves you better than it will serve him."

He turns and walks back toward his car, leaving Arthur standing alone on the front steps. The morning sun catches the worn wooden sign above the door.

"What did he want?" Vivian asks, climbing the steps toward her father as the car disappears down the road.
