The wind came down off the ridge like it had a grudge.

Ethan Cole had ridden this trail a hundred times, and never once had he met anyone on it. Which is why, when a woman stumbled out of the sagebrush with a baby pressed against her chest, he nearly put a bullet in the dirt out of pure surprise.

Her dress was torn at the hem. Her hands were bleeding. And behind her, far down the valley, dust was rising in a long, hard line.

Riders. Coming fast.

"Ma'am, you trying to get yourself killed?"

She didn't answer. She just held up the child, her arms shaking.

"Take my baby and ride."

"What?"

"Please. Don't ask me anything. Just take her."

"I'm not riding away with a stranger's child."

The woman looked back at the dust cloud. Then she looked at him, and what he saw in her eyes wasn't panic. It was something colder. Something already made peace with the worst.

"Then she'll die here with me."

A single gunshot cracked across the canyon. Too far to hit anything. Close enough to mean it.

"Who are they?"

"Men who won't leave witnesses."

"And the deputy?"

He'd seen the star glinting among the riders. Her face tightened.

"That's why you can't take me to the law."

Ethan stared at her for exactly one heartbeat. Then he swung down from the saddle, and his decision was already made.

"Give me the girl."

She handed her over. The baby, barely a year old, blinked up at him with enormous dark eyes and, remarkably, did not cry.

But when Ethan reached down with his free hand, it wasn't to take the mother's pack. It was to take her arm.

"What are you doing?"

"Get up."

"I told you to take Rose."

"And leave her mother for five armed men? Not how I was raised."

He lifted her into the saddle as if she weighed nothing, then swung up behind her, the baby tucked safe between them.

From below, a man's voice carried up the slope, smooth and almost friendly.

"Clara Bennett, stop! Nobody needs to get hurt!"

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"They know your name. That's the second thing you've forgotten to explain. Hate me later."

He wheeled the horse hard to the left, off the trail and straight into the rocks.

"This isn't the road."

"That's the idea."

"You know this country?"

"Better than they do."

The horse plunged down a goat path no wagon had ever touched. Gravel rained behind them. Bullets whined off the stone, closer now, much closer.

"You're not just a rancher."

Ethan almost laughed.

"Today I'm apparently a kidnapper. Hold on."

It was nearly dusk when they reached the place.

An abandoned freight shed, half-swallowed by a collapsed canyon wall, invisible unless you already knew it was there. Ethan had guided wagon trains past it for six years and never told a soul about it.

He pulled the horse inside and dropped the bar across the door.

"Inside."

Clara slid down, her legs buckling. Rose had finally started to fuss, small hungry whimpers in the dark.

"Where are we?"
