Then his eyes caught a movement behind the cabin curtains. His hand dropped to his gun.

"Don't go inside together."

"Why?"

"Because someone's waiting for Ethan. You should stay here."

Clara's chin lifted. She gave Rose to the bookkeeper and set her hand on the latch.

"No. No. This was Matthew's secret. I finish it."

"Clara, don't wait this time."

She pushed the door open.

Inside, a lone figure rose from the table. A tall, graying man with a stack of papers, who looked, for a moment, like someone seeing a ghost.

"This one's real. Matthew hoped you'd find it. Matthew gave me half to keep it from one man."

He laid the pages on the table, and Ethan finally understood what Matthew had hidden in his daughter's blanket.

Not a treasure map. Not gold. A deed. A true half of a deed, stitched into the lining, the other half sealed with the territorial court.

"I've been following the transfers. Matthew was helping me."

Clara ran her finger across a line of official signatures.

"Who used this?"

"The transfer office. Matthew never sold the land."

Clara's breath caught.

"Then someone sold me a lie."

The man gave a slow, steady nod.

"Enough for the territorial court. Your land remains yours."

Outside, the wind finally went quiet.

The wagons were packed. The horses were fed. For the first time in weeks, no one was running.

Clara stood at the edge of the porch with her daughter on her hip and watched the sun climb over land that, impossibly, was hers again.

Ethan stood a few steps away, hat in his hands. He looked, for the first time since she'd met him, uncertain.

"What will you do now?"

"I don't know. I don't know."

The silence between them felt like a held breath.

"You could ask me to stay."

He shook his head slowly.

"You could ask me to stay. I want to. But you spent long enough with men deciding where you belonged. I won't be another."

He settled his hat on his head and turned toward his horse.

"Goodbye, Ethan."

"Goodbye, Clara."

He made it to the gate. Put his hand on the latch.

Then Clara's voice cut across the yard.

"You said it had to be my choice. Then I'd want you here."

He stopped. He didn't turn around yet.

"For how long?"

Clara walked down the steps, Rose still on her hip, and stood beside him.

"Now I can't imagine leaving."

She smiled. Something that had been tight in her chest for eleven days finally unclenched.

"Morning, cowboy."

"What?"

"Nothing. Feels different."

Rose reached out and grabbed a handful of his collar, tugging him a little closer.

"We're not running."

"What is it?"

He looked down at the woman who had once begged him to ride away with her child, and who now, finally, was asking him to stay.

"I won't choose your future. I just want to be in it."

Clara laughed softly, tears bright in her eyes.

"Yes."

She had asked a stranger to take her baby and ride. He had taken both of them, and in the end, he never rode away at all.
