Teen told he just had ‘growing pains’ dies day after diagnosis

Sixteen-year-old Harley Andrews tragically passed away just hours after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia. His devastated family shared that he had complained of feeling unwell for weeks before his death — but doctors initially told him he was likely suffering from a viral infection or merely experiencing “growing pains.”

Harley, an active football player, showed no serious symptoms until last weekend when he noticed blood in his urine. Alarmed, his father Kevin Edwards and stepmother took him to the Royal Bolton Hospital, where doctors delivered the heartbreaking news: he had stage four leukemia. By then, the cancer had spread extensively, causing irreversible damage to his organs and brain, ultimately leading to internal bleeding.

A close family friend, Kaylee Jackson, created a GoFundMe page to help the family with expenses. “Harley was a bright, kind, and loving young soul who touched the hearts of everyone who knew him,” the campaign reads. “His passing has left an incredible void in our community. No parent should ever have to face such unimaginable pain, nor worry about financial burdens while grieving the loss of their child.”

As of publication, the fundraiser had collected more than £8,800, with donations continuing to pour in. Harley’s mother, Gemma, later posted a heartfelt message of gratitude on the fundraising page, writing on behalf of the family:

“We truly appreciate everyone’s support. Seeing how loved Harley was brings us comfort during this unbearable time.”

Kaylee, who had worked with Harley at Newton Westpark Primary School as a teaching assistant, remembered him as an “all-round good kid” who adored his large family — five brothers and four sisters.
“He was always surrounded by family,” she said. “Harley loved playing football in the street with his friends and giving piggyback rides to the little ones. He was just one of those kids everyone got along with — it’s such a shame because he was only just beginning his life.”

Harley played for Leigh Town, Astley & Tyldesley FC, and Leigh East Rugby Club, where he was known for his dedication, sportsmanship, and kind spirit.

His sudden passing serves as a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly aggressive illnesses like leukemia can progress — and how vital early detection truly is.
