Eleanor answered carefully. "The room noticed more than you think."

Nathan finally looked at her. "Has Vivian always spoken to people like that?"

Eleanor didn't answer immediately. Instead, she asked, "Do you want the comforting answer?"

Nathan frowned. "No. I want the truth."

Eleanor sighed. "I think tonight was simply the first time she forgot you were watching."

Nathan felt the words settle like stones.

Inside the ballroom, laughter continued. Champagne glasses clinked. The engagement party carried on. Yet, Nathan suddenly felt farther away from everyone than he ever had in his life.

Across the estate, Maria tucked Lily into a small bed inside the staff quarters.

"I'm sorry, Mommy."

Maria stroked her daughter's hair. "You did nothing wrong."

"Then why was that lady angry?"

Maria searched desperately for words. "Sometimes adults forget what's important."

Lily looked toward the window. "I liked Mr. Nathan."

Maria smiled faintly. "So do I."

"He looked sad."

Maria paused. "Why... why you think that?"

"Because when he smiled at me," Lily whispered, "his eyes didn't smile."

Meanwhile, Nathan walked back inside searching for Vivian. He found her laughing with three socialites near the grand staircase. She didn't notice him standing behind a marble column.

One of the women asked, "Who was that little girl?"

Vivian rolled her eyes. "The housekeeper's daughter."

Another woman laughed. "And Nathan actually gave her dessert."

Vivian smirked before replying, "He has a weakness for rescue missions. It's charming most of the time."

"And the rest of the time?"

Vivian lifted her champagne glass. "The rest of the time, someone has to remind him that kindness is wonderful until people start forgetting their place."

Nathan's hand slowly tightened around his glass. It cracked. The sound was almost invisible beneath the music. But the cut across his palm was real. And for the first time since asking Vivian to marry him, he wondered if the biggest mistake of his life had nothing to do with business. It had everything to do with love.

The next morning, before sunrise, a sealed envelope landed on Nathan's desk. There was no signature. Only six handwritten words: Ask the staff what they know.

He stared at the message for a long moment. Then he pressed the intercom. "Eleanor, cancel every meeting before noon."

"Why, sir?"

Nathan picked up the anonymous note, his pulse quickening. "Because I think I've been blind."

And somewhere else in the mansion, Vivian was already making a phone call she prayed Nathan would never find out about.

Nathan held the anonymous note between his fingers long after the intercom went silent. Six words. That was all it took to make him question the woman he had planned to spend the rest of his life with.

Within an hour, he walked through the headquarters of Sterling Global without security, without assistance, and without the polished image the business world expected. Employees looked up in surprise as he stopped to greet them one by one.

"Good morning, Mr. Sterling."

"Morning, Daniel. How's your son's recovery?"

Daniel blinked. "He's doing much better, sir."

Nathan smiled, but his mind wasn't there. He was watching faces, listening, waiting. Finally, he stepped into the staff dining room. Conversation stopped.

He looked around before saying quietly, "I need everyone to be honest with me."

No one spoke.

"I'm not here as your employer," he continued. "I'm here as a man who needs the truth."

Silence stretched across the room. Then an elderly janitor named Harold slowly stood. "You really want the truth, sir?"

"I do."

Harold looked around nervously. "Ms. Laurent treats people differently when you're not around."

Nathan felt his stomach tighten. "What do you mean?"

Harold hesitated. "She once told security not to let me use the main elevator because I didn't match the atmosphere."

Nathan stared at him. "You never reported it."

Harold smiled sadly. "You're a busy man. I figured you had bigger problems."

Another employee raised her hand. Then another. Stories began pouring out. A receptionist admitted Vivian had mocked her accent. A waiter confessed she'd sent back perfectly good meals simply because she wanted the chef reminded who was paying. One chauffeur quietly revealed that Vivian refused to learn the names of drivers because, in her words, they don't stay important long enough.

Every story sounded small on its own. Together, they formed a picture Nathan could no longer ignore.

Eleanor quietly entered the room halfway through the conversation. She didn't interrupt. She simply placed a thin folder beside Nathan. "I thought you might ask for this eventually."

Nathan opened it. Inside were written complaints. None had been official. None had reached his desk. Everyone had quietly disappeared after being settled by middle managers trying to avoid conflict before the wedding.

Nathan looked up slowly. "How many?"

Eleanor answered honestly. "Enough that I stopped believing they were coincidences."

Nathan closed the folder. "I should have seen it."

"You wanted to."

"No." He shook his head. "I wanted to believe love could hide what character kept revealing."

That afternoon, Nathan drove alone to the estate instead of using his chauffeur. For the first time in years, he entered through the service entrance.

Maria almost dropped a basket of laundry when she saw him. "Mr. Sterling."

"I came to apologize."

Maria immediately shook her head. "You don't owe me anything."

"I owe you more than you know."

She looked genuinely confused.

Nathan glanced toward the kitchen. "Is Lily home?"

Maria smiled. "She's outside drawing with sidewalk chalk."

Nathan stepped into the garden. Lily was kneeling on the stone path, carefully coloring a giant sun with yellow chalk. She looked up. "Hi, Mr. Nathan."

He smiled despite everything weighing on him. "That's a beautiful picture."
