"It's our house."

Nathan looked closer. The drawing included Maria, Lily, flowers, birds. Then he noticed something missing. "There isn't a dad."

Lily nodded quietly. "He went to heaven when I was little."

Nathan's smile faded. "I'm sorry."

"It's okay." She shrugged with a wisdom far beyond her years. "Mom says people don't really leave if you keep doing kind things they taught you."

Nathan looked away for a second. His own mother used to say something almost identical.

Lily reached into a small box beside her. "I made something." She handed him another paper flower. This one had brighter colors. "It's better than the first one."

Nathan laughed softly. "I thought the first one was perfect."

"I practiced."

He accepted it carefully. Then Lily tilted her head. "Can I ask you something?"

"You can ask me anything."

She looked completely serious. "Did I make your princess stop loving you?"

Nathan froze. The air itself seemed to stop moving. "What makes you ask that?"

"She looked really mad after you talked to me."

Nathan knelt until he was eye level with her. "No, Lily."

"Are you sure?"

"I'm sure."

She frowned. "Then why did she look at me like I broke something?"

Nathan couldn't answer. Because deep inside, he knew she had. Not intentionally. Not maliciously. She had simply revealed something that was already broken.

That evening, wedding planners filled the mansion with fabric samples, flower arrangements, and seating charts. Everything was ready. International guests had already confirmed. Private jets were booked. Luxury magazines had purchased exclusive coverage. The wedding was only 8 days away.

Vivian walked into Nathan's study carrying invitation designs. "What do you think?"

Nathan barely looked. "They're beautiful."

She smiled. "I knew you'd love them."

He remained silent. Vivian noticed. "What's wrong?"

Nathan slowly closed the folder Eleanor had given him. "I've been thinking."

"Dangerous habit." She laughed.

He didn't. The smile disappeared from her face. "What happened?"

Nathan looked directly into her eyes. "What do you think of Harold?"

She blinked. "Our janitor?"

"Yes."

"I don't."

"He says you wouldn't let him use the main elevator."

Vivian rolled her eyes. "Oh, Nathan."

"So, it's true."

"It wasn't personal."

"What was it?"

She sighed impatiently. "It's about presentation."

Nathan leaned forward. "Presentation?"

"The building represents your brand. And Harold doesn't." Vivian folded her arms. "You know exactly what I mean."

No. He spoke quietly. "I don't."

She walked toward the window. "People expect a certain image when they enter places like ours."

Nathan's voice became colder. "So, image matters more than dignity?"

She turned sharply. "I never said that."

"You didn't have to."

Vivian crossed the room. "Nathan, why are we even discussing employees a week before our wedding?"

"Because character doesn't take holidays."

She stared at him. "I've worked my whole life to belong in rooms like this."

Nathan answered calmly. "So did I."

"We can't let emotions cloud judgment."

"And we can't let status erase humanity."

For several seconds, neither of them spoke. Finally, Vivian whispered something Nathan never expected to hear. "You've changed."

Nathan nodded slowly. "No. I finally started paying attention."

Vivian picked up her engagement ring box from the desk. "You wouldn't throw away everything we've built over misunderstandings."

Nathan looked at the ring. Then at the paper flower Lily had made. One reflected light. The other reflected love. At that moment, the choice seemed far less complicated than it should have been.

Before Nathan could speak, Eleanor hurried into the room without knocking. She looked more shaken than Nathan had ever seen her. "Sir—"

"What is it?"

"You need to see this immediately." She handed him a tablet.

The screen showed security footage from the previous afternoon. Nathan pressed play. His heartbeat slowed, then nearly stopped.

The video revealed Vivian standing in the estate courtyard speaking to someone Nathan recognized instantly. And what happened over the next 30 seconds would make calling off the wedding seem like the smallest decision he had left to make.

Nathan watched the security footage again, then once more. He hoped he had misunderstood. He hoped there was some explanation. There wasn't.

On the screen, Vivian stood near the estate courtyard speaking with a private event coordinator. Her voice was clear, cold. " financières If the little girl appears during the wedding ceremony, make sure someone removes her before the guests notice."

Nathan felt the room become painfully quiet.

The coordinator hesitated. "Ms. Laurent, she is Mr. Sterling's employee's daughter."

Vivian smiled. "Exactly. Which is why it needs to be handled carefully."

Nathan's hand tightened around the tablet. But the worst part wasn't the order. It was what she said next. "People remember images, not intentions. I refuse to have my wedding remembered for the wrong reasons."
