Lena barely noticed him.

She would learn months later that Thomas had been there because his younger brother, Captain Michael Hale, had died in the same convoy.

Michael was one of the confirmed dead.

Thomas and Lena first spoke in a grief support meeting.

She recognized his last name.

"Hale?"

He nodded.

"My brother was Michael."

Lena stared.

"Isaiah talked about him."

Thomas's eyes watered.

"Michael talked about Isaiah too."

That was all.

No attraction.

No inappropriate connection.

Just two people sitting beneath fluorescent lights discussing men who had left home and never returned.

Thomas had lost his wife to cancer years earlier.

He had no children.

He understood grief without trying to solve it.

At first, he and Lena spoke once every few weeks.

Then Maya started asking questions about her father that Lena couldn't answer.

What was Daddy like when he was working?

Did Daddy ever get scared?

Who was with him when he died?

Thomas knew some stories through Michael's letters.

He shared them.

Maya liked him.

Lena resisted that.

For almost another year, Thomas remained simply "Mr. Thomas."

He fixed a broken fence once.

Helped Lena move a washing machine.

Drove Evelyn to a doctor's appointment when Lena was sick.

Nothing happened between them until almost two and a half years after Isaiah disappeared.

Their first kiss ended with Lena crying.

"I'm sorry."

Thomas stepped back immediately.

"You don't have to apologize."

"I feel like I'm cheating."

"You're not."

"It feels like it."

Thomas did not touch her again for two months.

Eventually Lena chose him.

Not because she stopped loving Isaiah.

Because she had finally accepted he was gone.

Thomas proposed quietly.

No restaurant.

No crowd.

No dramatic speech.

He told her he loved her and Maya.

He told her he would never ask her to erase Isaiah.

He told her that if she wanted to keep Isaiah's photographs in every room of the house, he would help dust the frames.

Lena married Thomas ten months before Isaiah came home.

Maya had begun calling Thomas "Dad" only six weeks before the wedding.

Thomas never asked her to.

The first time she said it, he went outside and cried in his truck.

Isaiah knew none of this.

All he knew was what he had seen through the kitchen window.

His wife in another man's arms.

His daughter calling that man Dad.

The next morning, someone knocked on the motel door.

Isaiah knew who it was before opening it.

Lena stood there.

She looked as if she had not slept.

He stepped aside.

She entered.

Neither spoke.

Isaiah remained standing.

Lena sat in the chair beside the window.

Finally she said, "Thomas isn't there."

Isaiah gave her a hard look.

"I didn't ask."

"I know."

"Where is he?"
