Ingot barked again. Three and a stop. Then she sat down under the hook and stared at the backpack, and every few minutes her black ear would go up and she would make a sound in her throat, and every so often she'd bark, three times, and look at me, and look back at the backpack.

I knew why. Or I thought I did. That was the trouble.

I had a secret in that backpack, and for twelve days I was sure the dog knew what it was.
