"On one condition."

"Naturally."

"My decisions are mine."

"Agreed."

"Including whether I remain."

His eyes held hers. "Especially that."

Silence settled between them. Eleanor glanced toward the doors beyond which servants were preparing another dinner, this one openly announced in her honor.

"You have not asked the question you came here to ask."

Nathaniel stood. "No." He walked around the table, stopping near enough that she could hear his breath, but not near enough to touch. "Because I nearly asked the wrong one."

Her pulse quickened. "Which one?"

"Whether you would become my duchess."

Eleanor went perfectly still.

Nathaniel's voice softened. "It is an impressive title."

"I have recently discovered titles are considerably less useful than advertised."

A breath of laughter escaped her. "Then what are you asking?"

He looked toward the chair, then back at her. "Eleanor Reed, may I have a place in the life you choose for yourself?"

Her eyes burned. "Not as my duke."

"Not unless circumstances require ceremonial clothing."

"Not as my rescuer."

Pain crossed his face. "Never that."

She stepped closer. "Then what would you be?"

Nathaniel reached for her hand but stopped before touching it. Eleanor looked at the space between their fingers. Then she closed it herself.

His hand tightened around hers.

"A man who loves you," he said, "and intends to spend the rest of his life earning the privilege."

Her breath shook. "That could take a very long time."

"I was hoping so."

Eleanor lifted her face. Their first kiss was quiet, almost cautious, warmed by firelight and everything they had refused to rush.

When they parted, his forehead rested briefly against hers.

"I love you," she whispered. "But if you ever doubt my arithmetic again, I shall prepare for humiliation."

"Public humiliation?"

"Naturally."

Months later, spring spread green across Blackmir. Eleanor sat beneath an old beech tree with estate papers beside her, while Nathaniel carried two cups across the grass. In the distance, newly planted fields rolled toward cottages with repaired roofs, and the mill wheel turned brightly in the afternoon sun.

He set one cup beside her and lowered himself onto the empty chair she had placed there. Not given by rank, not granted by society: invited.

Eleanor slipped her hand into his.

Blackmir had once been a house where nobody thought to save a chair for her. Now, the woman no one invited decided who belonged at her table, and the Duke beside her knew that being chosen was worth infinitely more than being obeyed.
