Not for employment. Not for Bruno. And certainly not for love. She had come searching for the evidence that might restore her name, but she had never expected the hound from her childhood to be there.
Bruno had recognized her before anyone else could. And now Alister was watching. Nathaniel was falling closer to her with every passing day. For Clara, the question was no longer whether the truth would come out.
It was whether she could tell Nathaniel herself before the man who destroyed her family told it for her. Alister moved before Clara could find the courage to tell Nathaniel the truth herself. It began in the library. Late one afternoon, Lady Rosamond entered unexpectedly and found Clara kneeling before an old cabinet that had belonged to Nathaniel’s father.
Clara had barely begun searching through its drawers when Rosamond demanded to know what a kitchen servant was doing among private family papers. Within the hour, Clara’s room was searched. The silver pendant was found first. Then came several carefully hidden papers bearing the Ashbourne crest and the name Lady Clara Ashbourne.
Alister seized upon them immediately. Before Nathaniel, his mother, and several members of the household, he accused Clara of something far worse than dishonesty. He claimed she was an impostor who had stolen possessions belonging to his dead cousin and invented a noble identity for herself. Nathaniel barely seemed to hear the accusations.
He looked only at Clara. There was one question he needed answered. Was Clara Hart even her real name? Clara could no longer hide behind the lie that had protected her for years.
She admitted that it was not. The answer struck Nathaniel harder than she expected. Her noble birth did not anger him. He cared nothing about discovering that the kitchen servant he had come to admire was actually the daughter of an earl.
What wounded him was realizing that every time he had opened himself to her, she had known he did not even know her true name. Clara tried to explain. She had been afraid. She believed Alister had already tried to kill her once.
Revealing herself to the wrong person could have cost her life. But Nathaniel could not understand why she had never trusted him. Clara’s answer silenced him. Trusting powerful men, she reminded him, was exactly how her family had lost everything.
Alister immediately produced documents of his own. Official records declared that Lady Clara Ashbourne had died years earlier in a carriage accident. To anyone who did not know the truth, his evidence looked convincing. The Dowager Duchess finally intervened.
Until Clara’s identity could be properly investigated, she could not remain at Blackwood Hall. Clara accepted the decision without protest. She packed what little she owned and left before nightfall. Nathaniel watched her carriage disappear beyond the gates.
He could have stopped her. He did not. And that silence hurt Clara more than every accusation Alister had made. Then Bruno broke free.
The hound raced after the departing carriage and vanished down the road. Hours passed before he returned. By then, rain had begun falling across the estate. Bruno appeared at the doors of Blackwood Hall soaked through, his paws covered in mud and an old leather pouch clenched tightly between his teeth.
Nathaniel recognized the seal immediately. It had belonged to his father. Inside was a letter written by the Earl of Ashbourne shortly before his death. It confirmed that evidence concerning the Ashbourne estate had been entrusted to the late Duke for safekeeping.
And at the bottom was a warning Nathaniel could not ignore. If anything happened to the Earl, Alister Vane was to be held responsible. Nathaniel stared at the page. Clara had been telling the truth.
But Bruno had brought back one more thing. Tucked behind the letter was an old childhood sketch of a little girl sitting in the grass beside a young hound. Nathaniel slowly looked from the drawing to Bruno. The little girl was Clara.
The puppy was Bruno. And at last, Nathaniel understood. The hound had never chosen a stranger in his kitchen. He had simply found his way back to someone he had loved long before Nathaniel ever knew her name.
Nathaniel did not wait for morning. The moment he understood what Bruno had brought him, he ordered his horse saddled and rode out into the rain, carrying the Earl of Ashbourne’s letter beneath his coat. But Clara was no longer running.
For years, fear had decided where she slept, what name she used, and how carefully she moved through the world. Leaving Blackwood Hall had finally forced her to see that disappearing again would only give Alister what he wanted. So before Nathaniel could reach her, Clara turned back.
By the time he returned to Blackwood Hall, soaked from the road and frustrated by finding her carriage gone, Clara was already standing inside the entrance hall. This time, she had not come as a servant. She had come to reclaim her name.
Alister was summoned along with the Dowager Duchess and Lady Rosamond. Clara stood before them without lowering her eyes. Then she removed the silver pendant from her neck. The crowned stag beneath three stars had always been more than a family crest.
