The pendant opened. Hidden inside was a tiny folded sheet containing account numbers, dates, and names copied from her father’s private ledger before his death. Nathaniel placed the list beside the papers Bruno had recovered. The pieces finally fit.
Money supposedly borrowed by the Earl had instead been transferred through accounts controlled by Alister. Debts had been created after the Earl’s death, signatures had been forged, and payments had been made to men connected to the road where Clara’s carriage was attacked. Alister denied everything, but this time Clara was prepared.
Nathaniel had already sent for an elderly steward who had served the Ashbourne family for decades. The man arrived before nightfall. The moment he saw Clara, his composure broke. He recognized her immediately.
So did Bruno. The old hound rushed toward him with the same joyful certainty he had shown Clara in the kitchen. Whatever doubts remained began to collapse. Alister saw it, too.
And suddenly, he ran. He made it as far as the entrance doors before Clara stepped into his path. For years, she had imagined what she would say if she ever stood before the man who had destroyed her family. When the moment came, she needed very few words.
Alister had not merely stolen Ashbourne land. He had stolen her home, her name, her safety, and years of her life. But he had failed at the one thing he had wanted most. He had failed to erase her.
Nathaniel’s men seized Alister before he could escape. The investigation that followed restored what had been taken from Clara. Her identity as Lady Clara Ashbourne was formally recognized, and the estate that had belonged to her father would return to her.
The Dowager Duchess could scarcely reconcile the truth with the woman she had once regarded as an unsuitable kitchen servant. Lady Rosamond, however, seemed almost relieved. Clara was noble, after all. Surely that made Nathaniel’s attachment to her respectable.
Nathaniel surprised them both. Her title, he made clear, changed nothing. He had not fallen for Lady Clara Ashbourne. He had fallen for the woman with flour on her sleeves, who spoke to him as though he were a man before he was a duke.
He had fallen for the woman who challenged him, confused him, and somehow made the kitchen feel more alive than any ballroom he had ever entered. He would have chosen Clara Hart just as surely. Clara listened, but she did not make forgiveness easy for him. Nathaniel had doubted her when she needed him most.
And he knew an apology could not erase that. So he gave her something more difficult: patience. He admitted that fear had made him retreat behind his pride. He admitted that Bruno had trusted her with more courage than he had.
That finally brought the first real laugh from Clara since her return. Perhaps, Nathaniel conceded, his hound simply possessed better judgment than his master. Clara did not answer immediately. Then, slowly, she placed her hand in his.
And Nathaniel finally understood that destiny had never been waiting for him beneath chandeliers or among perfectly bred ladies in crowded ballrooms. It had been dragging him by the leash down a servants’ corridor and straight toward the woman waiting in his kitchen. In the weeks that followed, Clara’s name was restored publicly along with the honor Alister had tried to bury.
Society reacted exactly as society always did. Some whispered about the scandal. Others suddenly remembered that they had always respected the Ashbourne family. Invitations began arriving from people who would not have looked twice at Clara when they believed she was only a cook.
Nathaniel found the hypocrisy amusing. Clara found it exhausting. But neither of them cared nearly as much as they once might have. Nathaniel did not hide his intentions.
Before his family, his household, and everyone whose opinion had once been expected to matter, he made it clear that Clara was the woman he intended to marry. Not because she had regained an estate, not because she carried an old and respected name, and not because marrying Lady Clara Ashbourne was suddenly considered acceptable. He chose her because he had already fallen in love with her when she stood in his kitchen with flour on her hands.
Clara did not accept him immediately. Nathaniel had promised patience, and she made certain he practiced it. But months later, beneath the old trees of Blackwood Hall, she finally agreed to become his wife. Their wedding was smaller than society expected and warmer than either of them had imagined.
And when Clara walked toward Nathaniel on the morning she became Duchess of Blackwood, Bruno was supposed to remain quietly beside his handler. He lasted less than a minute. The old hound broke free, hurried straight toward Clara, and sat proudly beside her gown as though he had personally arranged the entire marriage. Perhaps, in his own way, he had.
Years earlier, Bruno had been the puppy who followed young Clara through Ashbourne Manor. He had remembered her voice, her scent, and the silver crest she once wore, long before Nathaniel understood why the mysterious cook seemed so familiar to him. Nathaniel had spent years believing destiny would arrive through duty, rank, and careful decisions.
Instead, destiny had four paws, terrible manners, and an absolute refusal to stay out of the kitchen. And somehow, Bruno had found Nathaniel’s Duchess before Nathaniel even knew he was searching for her.
