"All right," Nolan said. "Ancil, would you mind stepping out here a minute. Just out here, where there's some room."

Ancil looked at him for a moment. Then he put his cap on his head and stood up off the stool and came out of the booth, and stood in the aisle by the pharmacy step, by a display of compression stockings, facing the sheriff. He was not as tall as Nolan by two or three inches, but he stood up straight, with his hands at his sides, and he did not look at the floor.

"Thank you," Nolan said. "I'm not trying to make anything of this. You know me."

"I know you."

"So you're here picking up for Ivah."

"Yes."

"Hydromorphone."

"I don't think that's any of your business, Nolan," Ancil said, quite mildly. "But yes."

"And she was on something else before that? Somebody said oxycodone."
