Grief.

The child they had lost.

The life they thought they would have.

The life that arrived anyway.

Marcus remained mostly unaware of the details.

He knew Daniel was staying.

That was enough.

Months passed.

Spring arrived.

Daniel repainted the porch railing.

Marcus insisted on helping.

He accidentally painted one of his sneakers.

Emily laughed from the doorway.

For a second, Daniel looked at her and saw the nineteen-year-old waitress who once dared him to ask for her number.

There was still damage between them.

But there was also history.

And perhaps something new.

One Saturday, Daniel took Marcus to the military cemetery where Elijah was buried.

Emily stayed home.

Daniel believed this should belong to the boy.

They stood in front of the headstone.

Marcus carried a small toy soldier.

Daniel knelt beside him.

"You don't have to leave anything."

"I want to."

Marcus placed the toy near the stone.

They stood silently.

After a while, Marcus asked, "Do you think he knew me?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Of course."

"I don't remember much."

"That doesn't mean he didn't."

Marcus touched the headstone.

Daniel told him stories.

The harmless ones.

Elijah singing badly.

Elijah cheating at cards.

Elijah stealing Daniel's dessert.

Marcus laughed.

Then Daniel told him the important one again.

How Elijah went back.

How courage sometimes looked like refusing to leave someone behind.

On the drive home, Marcus stared out the window.

Then he asked, "Can I call you something?"

Daniel glanced over.

"What?"

Marcus looked nervous.

"I don't know."

Daniel understood.

He kept his eyes on the road.

"You don't have to call me Dad."

"I know."

"Your dad is your dad."

Marcus nodded.

Daniel continued.

"Nothing changes that."

"What do I call you then?"

Daniel smiled.

"Daniel works."

Marcus made a face.

"That's boring."

"Staff Sergeant Mercer?"

"Worse."

"Sir?"

Marcus laughed.

Daniel laughed too.

Then Marcus said quietly, "Maybe Bonus Dad."

Daniel nearly drove off the road.

"Absolutely not."

Marcus laughed harder.

"Why?"

"That is terrible."
