"Play it," Harmon said to Tobias, not looking away from Vance.
The video ran forty-one seconds. In the small office, without the noise of a full classroom to dilute it, every word landed with a distinct, individual weight. Students like you don't belong in programs like this. The tear of paper. Sit down before I make sure you lose it.
When it ended, nobody spoke for a long moment.
"That's out of context," Vance finally said, though her voice had lost most of its conviction. "You don't understand the history here, the — the years of small disrespects, the—"
"Mrs. Vance." Harmon's voice was quiet in a way that made Malcolm, watching, understand for the first time just how much restraint the principal was exercising. "I have known you for eleven years. I have advocated for this program's budget every single one of them. I do not need context to understand what I just watched a grown woman do to a seventeen-year-old boy over a piece of paper that represents four years of his life's work. What I need from you right now is your keys to the supply closet and the research lab, because you will not be in that classroom again today, and I strongly suspect you won't be in it again this year."
Vance's face went through several expressions in quick succession — outrage, calculation, something that might, for half a second, have actually been shame — before settling into a kind of brittle, cornered stillness.
