Malcolm started at Caldwell Institute of Technology that August with a scholarship letter that had, at his own request, never been reprinted clean. Priscilla Odom had offered to send a fresh, undamaged copy for his records, and Malcolm had declined.

"I want the taped one," he told her, when she asked why. "It's the real one. Everything after it was just somebody fixing what almost got taken from me. I'd rather remember it exactly the way it actually happened."

He kept it in a plain frame on his dorm room desk for all four years of college — the tear line still faintly visible under the tape, right through the university's letterhead, right through the words full scholarship, a small, permanent reminder that the shape of your future can survive being torn, as long as somebody is willing to pick up every piece.

Tobias visited him there twice, once during their respective freshman years and once the summer after, and on the second visit, sitting in Malcolm's dorm room looking at that same taped letter, he finally told Malcolm the part of the story he'd never explained — about Vivian, about the bathroom door, about six years of quiet, unresolved anger finally finding somewhere useful to go.

"I didn't do it just for you," he admitted. "I want you to know that. I'd been waiting a long time to catch her doing something I could actually prove."

Malcolm looked at him for a long moment, and then said the thing that Tobias would remember, in some form, for the rest of his life.

"Doesn't matter why you hit record," Malcolm said. "Matters that you did."
