"South."
"Long way south from here."
"Yes, ma'am."
"Pa," the girl said. It was the first thing she'd said. She was still looking at the case. "Is there going to be pie?"
"Not tonight, punkin."
"The sign said pie." She turned to Coralee, gravely, a lawyer presenting evidence. "There's a sign out on the road. It's got a picture of a pie on it with steam. I read it. I can read P-I-E."
"That's real good reading," Coralee said. "That sign's older than me, nearly. What's your name?"
"Dovie."
"That's a pretty name."
"It's for a bird. My mama named me." She thought about it. "It's really Dorothy but nobody says Dorothy except at the doctor."
"Dovie," the old man said. Not sharply. But she closed her mouth and looked down at her straw.
