“That’s not why.”

“Then tell me why.”

Samantha’s jaw tightened.

“You walked in here acting like you were better than everybody.”

Zaria blinked.

“When?”

“From the first day.”

“The day you told me I couldn’t use a school hallway?”

Tiffany laughed.

Samantha shot her a look.

Zaria continued.

“I didn’t want your position.”

“You think I care about that?”

“Yes.”

Samantha stepped closer until their faces were less than a foot apart.

“You have no idea what I care about.”

“Then stop making it my problem.”

The smile disappeared.

Samantha bumped Zaria’s shoulder.

Deliberately.

Zaria stepped back.

“Don’t.”

Samantha did it again.

Tiffany’s phone was recording now.

Zaria noticed.

That confirmed everything.

They wanted a reaction.

She picked up her bag.

“Move.”

Samantha blocked her.

“Or what?”

“Nothing.”

Zaria turned toward the opposite direction.

Brooke stepped sideways.

Not completely blocking her.

Enough to slow her.

Zaria stopped.

“You guys really want to do this with a camera running?”

Samantha glanced toward Tiffany.

Then smiled.

“Who’s doing anything?”

Zaria shook her head.

She tried to walk around.

Samantha reached for the strap of her bag.

Zaria pulled it away.

“Don’t touch my stuff.”

Samantha grabbed the strap again.

Zaria let the bag drop.

“Happy?”

Samantha stared at her.

Something about Zaria refusing to fight over the bag frustrated her.

She stepped forward and shoved Zaria with both hands.

Zaria stumbled into the lockers.

The metal doors rattled behind her.

Tiffany’s smile disappeared slightly.

Brooke whispered, “Sam.”

Zaria straightened.

“I’m telling you once.”

Her voice was low.

“Don’t touch me again.”

Samantha laughed.

“You going to cry?”

“No.”

“You going to tell Coach Ortiz?”

“If I need to.”

“Of course.”

Samantha stepped even closer.

“That’s what you do.”

Zaria frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“You come here for five minutes, everybody thinks you’re amazing, coaches love you, and the second somebody doesn’t kiss your ass, you run to an adult.”

Zaria stared at her.

“You put food in my locker.”

“Prove it.”

There it was.

Not an admission.

Close enough to tell Zaria she had been right.

Zaria nodded slowly.

“I don’t need to.”

She bent toward her bag.

Samantha grabbed one of her braids.

Pain shot across Zaria’s scalp.

She came upright immediately.

“LET GO.”

Samantha pulled harder.

Brooke backed away.

Tiffany kept recording.

Zaria reached behind herself and tried to free the braid.

“Sam, stop.”

Brooke’s voice sounded nervous now.

Samantha twisted her grip.

Zaria turned with the pull, catching Samantha’s wrist.

“Let go of my hair.”

Samantha shoved her.

Zaria lost balance.

Her hip struck the edge of the wooden bench.

She fell sideways across it and then toward the floor.

The phone camera moved wildly.

For a moment, Zaria was half-seated, half-fallen beside the bench while Samantha remained above her.

Samantha reached down.

Zaria raised one arm to protect her face.

“Stay down.”

Those two words changed something.

Zaria looked up.

Samantha’s expression was no longer playful.

No smirk.

No performance.

She meant it.

Stay down.

For weeks, that had been the message beneath everything.

Stay out of the hallway.

Stay off the team.

Stay quiet.

Stay grateful.

Stay small.

Stay down.

Zaria planted one hand against the bench.

She stood.

Samantha stepped toward her again.

Zaria pushed her back.

“Enough.”

Samantha swung.

The first hit glanced across Zaria’s shoulder.

Zaria backed away.

Samantha came again.

Zaria blocked the second attempt with both arms.

Tiffany shouted something behind the camera.

Brooke moved farther away.

Zaria tried once more to create distance.

“Stop.”

Samantha grabbed her shirt.

Zaria caught Samantha’s wrist.

Samantha pulled.

Zaria turned.

Months of refusing to react disappeared in a few seconds.

Zaria did not suddenly become fearless.

She became finished.

She shoved Samantha backward.

Samantha recovered and charged again.

Zaria moved sideways.

Samantha’s momentum carried her forward.

Zaria caught her upper arm and shoulder, turned with the movement, and drove her away.

Samantha stumbled.

Her heel caught the leg of the wooden bench.

She fell.

Hard.

Her back hit the floor.

The hallway went silent.

Zaria stood over her for less than a second.

Then stepped back.

She did not kick her.

She did not punch her while she was down.

She did not celebrate.

Samantha looked up, stunned.

Zaria’s braids hung across her face.

Her chest rose and fell rapidly.

“You told me to stay down.”

She picked up her bag.

“Now you know what it feels like.”

Footsteps thundered from around the corner.

Coach Ortiz appeared first.

Coach Avery followed.

Both stopped.

Samantha was on the floor.

Zaria was standing.

Tiffany held a phone.

Brooke looked terrified.

Coach Avery reacted immediately.

“Zaria!”

Zaria closed her eyes.

Of course.

“Step away from Samantha.”

“I already did.”

“What happened?”

Samantha sat up.

“She attacked me.”

Zaria looked at her.

Tiffany lowered the phone.

Brooke stared at the floor.

Coach Ortiz noticed.

“Brooke.”

The girl looked up.

“What happened?”

Nobody answered.

Ortiz pointed toward Tiffany’s phone.

“Give me that.”

Tiffany clutched it.

“It’s mine.”

“I’m not keeping it. I want you to show us what you recorded.”

Tiffany looked at Samantha.

That look was enough.

Coach Avery’s expression changed.

“Now.”

The video lasted a little over two minutes.

It showed Zaria dumping food from the container.

It showed the cheerleaders laughing behind her.

It showed the confrontation.

It showed Samantha blocking her.

Grabbing the bag.

Shoving her into the lockers.

Pulling her braid.

Knocking her onto the bench.

Then it showed Zaria standing again.

The final seconds showed Samantha moving toward her repeatedly before Zaria fought back.

Coach Avery watched twice.

Nobody spoke.

When the video ended, Samantha said, “She was provoking me.”

Coach Ortiz stared at her.

“She tried to walk away four times.”
