You pick up your daughter. And you live your life in a way that makes Parks filing nothing but a footnote that never gets opened again. The simplicity of it was in its way more frightening than a threat would have been. Because a threat gave you something to push against.
This just gave you the truth that the biggest thing you could do was the smallest seeming thing and that taking yourself out of the story entirely was the only move that mattered now. Leo understood it. He understood it the way you understand a thing when the person saying it has the full weight of their life behind every word. "Okay." He said for the third time that night.
But this okay was different from the first two. The first had been reluctant. The second had been resigned. This one was clear.
Corey nodded, didn't say anything, just nodded and that was enough. Mike looked at Bobby. Get Sully a message. Tell him to keep watch on Park for 72 hours.
Any movement that looks like it's pointing this direction, I want to know. Bobby was already typing. Mike stood up. For the first time all night he stood in the full presence of him upright was a different thing from the presence of him seated which had already been considerable.
He reached into his wallet, left money on the table that covered the meal with room to spare and looked at Brenda. "Your door gets fixed by Friday." He said. "If your nephew gives you any trouble on the timeline, call the number on the card Bobby's going to leave you. Somebody will take care of it." Bobby looked faintly surprised but put a card on the counter without comment.
Brenda looked at the card. She looked at Mike. "You come back through here, I'll have a patty melt waiting." She said. Mike looked at her for a moment.
