"Oh God," Leo whispered. He said it low. He did not mean to say it out loud. But in the silence of booth nine, it was perfectly audible.
And something passed between the four men in that booth that was not quite a smile and not quite an exchange of glances. It was something older and more compressed than either of those things. A frequency of shared understanding that only passes between people who have stood at the edge of things together enough times that words become unnecessary. "That's right," Mike said.
He hadn't raised his voice once. "Now, you want to think real hard about your next move. Because what you do in the next 30 seconds is going to determine whether you walk out of here or get carried out. And I would genuinely like it if you walked." Corey hadn't seen the patches yet.
He was still at the register, still pushing the barrel of the revolver toward Brenda's face, still demanding she open the drawer, still completely unaware of what had just shifted in the geometry of the room. "Leo, what's taking so long? Get those guys' wallets. We need to move." Leo didn't answer.
"Leo," Corey. Leo's voice came out barely above a breath. "Corey, stop what you're doing right now and look at this booth." Silence. Then the sound of Corey's sneakers on the linoleum, coming closer, stopping.
The silence that followed was the longest four seconds Leo Danton had ever lived through. "Are those" Corey started. "Yes" Leo said. "Are they" "Yes." Another pause.
Bobby reached out and turned his coffee cup 90 degrees on the table. Nobody said anything about it. But every person in that room understood the meaning. Not the cup itself, but the absolute unhurried calm of the gesture.
The absolute certainty of the man who made it. The message encoded in that small precise movement. "I am not worried. I have never been worried.
