"Miss Chen," he said.

Maya held her breath.

"This academy has strict rules about admission," Dr. Holloway continued. "We have requirements that must be met, prerequisites that candidates must have completed, standards that must be upheld."

Maya's heart began to sink. She knew where this was going: rules, requirements, standards—words that meant no.

"However," Dr. Holloway said, and something in his voice changed, "there is another rule at this academy, an unwritten rule that is older than any of the official ones. It says that when we encounter true talent, true genius, true artistry, we have a responsibility to nurture it. We have a responsibility to give it a chance to grow." He paused. "Miss Chen, the piece you played for us today was extraordinary. It was not technically perfect. There were moments of uncertainty, places where a trained pianist would have done things differently. But none of that matters, because what you showed us was something far more valuable than technical perfection: you showed us a voice—a unique, original, deeply moving voice that deserves to be heard."

Maya felt tears beginning to form in her eyes. She blinked them back.

"We are not just offering you a place at this academy," Dr. Holloway said. "We are offering you a full scholarship: tuition, room, board, and a weekly stipend for living expenses. Everything will be covered."

Maya stared at him. She could not speak; she could not move.

"Additionally," Professor Vasquez added, "I would like to personally oversee your training. I have never heard anyone play the way you play. I want to help you develop your gift, to give you the technical foundation you need to share your music with the world."

Dr. Webb stepped forward. "And I would like to help you document your compositions. You have been creating music in your head for years. It is time to write it down, to record it, to let other people hear what you have been carrying inside you."

Maya felt the tears spill over now. She could not stop them; they ran down her cheeks and fell onto the piano keys.

"I do not know what to say," she whispered.

Dr. Holloway did something unexpected then: he sat down on the piano bench beside her, just as Professor Vasquez had done earlier.
