"Yes, Carnegie Hall. We have been following your story since your audition video went viral. We have been listening to the recordings you have made at the academy, and we believe you are ready for a major debut. We would like to offer you a solo concert in our main auditorium, one year from now."
Maya could not speak. Carnegie Hall was the most famous concert venue in the world: the greatest musicians in history had performed there—pianists she had studied, composers she admired, legends whose names she whispered with reverence. And now they were asking her to play there.
"Miss Chen, are you still there?"
"Yes," Maya managed to say. "Yes, I am here. I just... I do not know what to say."
Robert Shaw laughed warmly. "Take your time. This is a big decision. Talk to your mentor. Talk to your family. We are not going anywhere; the invitation will remain open."
After the call ended, Maya stood on the sidewalk for a long time. The city moved around her—cars passing, people walking, lights flickering in windows. She felt like she was in a dream.
Carnegie Hall. They wanted her to play at Carnegie Hall.
She called Dr. Holloway immediately. He answered on the second ring. "Maya, is everything all right?"
"I just got a call," Maya said. Her voice was shaking. "From Carnegie Hall. They want me to perform there. A solo concert, one year from now."
There was silence on the other end of the line. Then Dr. Holloway said something Maya did not expect: "Are you ready?"
Maya thought about the question. Was she ready? She had only been at the academy for six months; she had so much still to learn. Her technique was improving, but it was far from perfect. Her repertoire was growing, but it was still limited.
"I do not know," she said honestly. "I do not think so. Not yet."
"Good," Dr. Holloway said. "That is the right answer. If you had said yes, I would be worried. The fact that you recognize how much you still have to learn tells me that you might actually be ready. Not today. Not tomorrow. But in a year, with hard work and dedication, you could be."
