"So the broke old man has a name."
"He was not pretending. He argued with the family, dismissed his driver, took a bus, and left with an old wallet. We searched half the night, and eventually his chauffeur rescued him after he called."
Chloe folded her arms. "Why did Arthur recognize my necklace?"
"That is what we are trying to understand."
"Then ask him."
"I did." Henry's expression shifted. "He would not answer."
Chloe realized Henry might also be outside the mystery. "What do you want?"
"Your mother's full name, her birth name, and anything you know about the pendant."
Before she could answer, Dean opened the door. "Are you working today or holding meetings?"
Henry turned. "She needs a few minutes."
Dean noticed the suit and car. "Of course, no problem."
Chloe nearly laughed.
"What?" Henry asked.
"Expensive fabric makes people patient."
He glanced at his jacket. "Should I take it off?"
"Please do not."
"I will come back after your shift."
"Do not."
"I probably will anyway. And do not bring reimbursement for dinner. My grandfather insists I do not."
By afternoon, Dean called Chloe into the storage room. "This situation is bringing attention I do not need."
"What situation?"
"You gave away food."
"I paid for it."
"You embarrassed this restaurant."
Chloe understood. "You are firing me."
"I am preventing future problems."
She untied her apron. "I want everything I am owed."
"Payroll handles that."
"Then I will sit at the front table until payroll becomes unusually efficient."
Dean stared at her.
"If customers ask," Chloe continued, "I will explain why the waitress who bought an elderly man dinner got fired."
