He called Chloe. She declined.

I found something, she replied.

Then say it, not by message.

When Henry arrived, Chloe opened the door halfway. "You have 5 minutes."

"My mother was not telling the whole truth."

The door opened farther. "Come in."

Henry placed records on the table. "The payment happened before Megan left."

Chloe compared the dates. "So it could not have been money to make her disappear."

"No."

"Who received it?"

"I do not know yet."

"You say that often."

"Because guesses can become false facts. My mother died with people believing she was a thief. There is no comfortable version of this."

Henry lowered his eyes. "You are right."

Chloe showed him the photograph's faded note: You promised me he would never know.

Henry read it. "Could Megan have written that?"

"Possibly. And 'he' could be my grandfather."

"Possibly. There is something else: my father had serious financial problems before he married my mother."

Chloe stared at him. "The debt... it could have been his. And Megan protected them."

"We do not know that yet."

Chloe groaned.

Henry raised a hand. "If I turn suspicion into truth because it helps us, I repeat what my family did to Megan."

That stopped her. After a moment, she sat. "Fine. What next?"

"There are personal records belonging to my grandmother at Arthur's house."

"Bethany will hate that."

"She already hates this."

"Then let us disappoint her."

Back at the house, Bethany stood outside the old office. "You two have become a team quickly."

Henry ignored the remark. "We need Grandmother's records."

"No."

"The money was transferred before Megan left."
