The first note stopped half the room.

The second made Evelyn Harrington turn around.

By the third, she was already walking toward the piano.

It was six twenty-five on a Saturday evening inside the Grand Meridian Hotel in downtown Chicago, thirty-five minutes before the doors would officially open for the Harrington Arts Foundation’s annual winter gala. Staff members moved between round tables covered in ivory linen. Florists adjusted white roses beneath chandeliers. Servers lined champagne glasses on silver trays, and a six-piece string ensemble in the corner quietly checked tuning.

At the far end of the ballroom stood the reason Evelyn had donated nearly four hundred thousand dollars over the previous decade to the foundation.

A nine-foot Steinway concert grand.

Black lacquer.

Perfectly polished.

Restored the year before through a grant bearing her late husband’s name.

And sitting at that piano was a little Black girl in a dark blue dress.

She could not have been older than eleven.

Her feet barely reached the pedals.

A small pair of black flats rested beside the bench because she had slipped them off before playing. Her hair was arranged in neat braids gathered behind her head, and a thin silver bracelet hung loosely around one wrist.

She was not playing random notes.

That was what irritated Evelyn first.

The child was playing beautifully.

Cleanly.

Confidently.

As though the piano belonged to her.

Evelyn crossed the ballroom.

A catering captain moved aside.

The girl continued.

Her left hand rolled through a low pattern while her right carried a restrained, aching melody above it. Nothing showy. Nothing that sounded like the children’s recital music Evelyn expected from someone her age.

Several employees had stopped working.

One server stood holding six empty champagne flutes and simply listened.

Evelyn’s mouth tightened.

“Excuse me.”

The child did not hear.

Or pretended not to.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Excuse me.”

The girl stopped.

The last chord remained in the room longer than Evelyn expected.

She turned on the bench.

Up close, she looked even younger.

Large brown eyes.

Round face.

No makeup.

A laminated badge hung from a blue ribbon around her neck, but it had twisted backward so Evelyn could not read it.

“Yes?”

Evelyn looked toward the piano.

“Who told you that you could play this?”

The girl blinked.

“My teacher.”

“Who is your teacher?”

“Mr. Carter.”

Evelyn waited.

The name meant nothing.

“Is he with the hotel?”

“No.”

“The foundation?”

“Kind of.”

Evelyn’s patience shortened.

Around them, several employees had resumed moving, though more slowly than before.

“This instrument is not available for guests to play.”

The girl looked toward the keyboard.

“I know.”

“Then why are you playing it?”

“My teacher told me to warm up.”

Evelyn frowned.

“Warm up for what?”

The girl opened her mouth.

A woman in catering black passed behind them carrying folded napkins.

Evelyn looked at her.

“Do you know where this child’s parents are?”

The girl’s expression changed.

Not dramatically.

A small tightening around her eyes.

“I’m not lost.”

Evelyn turned back.

“I didn’t say you were.”

“You asked where my parents are.”

“Yes.”

“Because you think I’m not supposed to be here.”

Evelyn stared.

The confidence irritated her more than the piano had.

“I think an eleven-year-old should not be using a concert instrument without supervision.”

“I’m ten.”

That somehow made it worse.

Evelyn looked around.

“Where is this Mr. Carter?”

“He went to get Ms. Brooks.”

“Who is Ms. Brooks?”

The girl hesitated.

“You don’t know Ms. Brooks?”

Evelyn almost laughed.

“I know quite a few people.”

The child looked toward the piano.

Evelyn interpreted the expression as attitude.

“Get down, please.”

The girl stared.

“Why?”
