“Because I asked you.”

That sentence came out before Evelyn had time to hear it.

The girl heard it.

Her small hands folded in her lap.

“My teacher said I should stay here.”

“And I am telling you not to touch the piano.”

The girl swallowed.

“I wasn’t hurting it.”

“That is not the issue.”

“What is the issue?”

Evelyn stopped.

For one uncomfortable second, she did not have an answer that sounded as reasonable aloud as it had inside her head.

The piano was expensive.

The event was private.

The child was unattended.

Guests would arrive soon.

Those were facts.

Yet none of them explained why Evelyn felt so certain the little girl did not belong on the bench.

A man in a dark suit approached from the ballroom entrance.

Hotel security.

Evelyn recognized him from previous events.

His name was Daniel Price.

Forty-something.

Broad shoulders.

Black.

Professional.

He carried no visible weapon, only a radio clipped near his jacket.

Evelyn felt relief.

“Daniel.”

He approached.

“Mrs. Harrington.”

She gestured toward the girl.

“Could you help us?”

Daniel looked at the child.

Then the piano.

Then Evelyn.

“What seems to be the problem?”

“This young lady is using the foundation piano without supervision, and apparently no one knows where the adult responsible for her is.”

The girl immediately said:

“I know where he is.”

Daniel looked toward her.

“Okay.”

“What’s your name?”

“Amaya Reed.”

Evelyn heard the surname.

Nothing.

Daniel crouched slightly so he was not towering over her.

“Amaya, who are you here with?”

“Mr. Leonard Carter.”

Daniel nodded.

“And where is Mr. Carter?”

“He went backstage.”

“Do you have a badge?”

Amaya reached toward the ribbon around her neck and turned the laminated card around.

Daniel read it.

His eyebrows rose.

Evelyn noticed.

“What?”

Daniel stood.

“Mrs. Harrington, she has an event credential.”

Evelyn looked.

The badge read:

HARRINGTON ARTS FOUNDATION

WINTER GALA 2026

PERFORMER ACCESS

AMAYA REED

Evelyn stared.

Then at the girl.

“Performer?”

Amaya nodded.

Something uncomfortable moved through Evelyn’s chest.

Not enough.

She recovered quickly.

“There must be a mistake.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Why?”

Evelyn looked at the child.

Then at the piano.

“She is ten.”

Amaya answered:

“Yes.”

Daniel said nothing.

Evelyn continued.

“The main performers tonight are adults.”

Amaya’s hands closed around the edge of the bench.

“No.”

Evelyn looked toward her.

The girl swallowed.

“There’s one kid.”

“How do you know?”

Amaya stared at her.

“Because it’s me.”

Before Evelyn could answer, a man’s voice came from behind them.
