Why unplug the TV when staying at a hotel?

Unplug the TV

After checking into a hotel room, it is recommended that you unplug the TV. This is one of the easiest places to hide a camera. Because cameras are small and TVs are large, it’s hard to detect a camera if it’s hidden somewhere inside the TV. Moreover, TVs usually face the bed, giving them the best viewing angle. Therefore, the first thing you should do when entering a room is to unplug the TV. This way, even if a camera is installed inside, it won’t function normally once the power is cut.

Use your mobile phone to detect hidden cameras

Unplugging the TV doesn’t guarantee there are no cameras in the room. Some cameras run on battery power or wireless systems. So, it’s important to check other corners of the room as well. These cameras are often too small to see with the naked eye, but your mobile phone can help detect them.

The method is simple: turn off all the lights in the room and close the curtains tightly so the room becomes completely dark. Then turn on your phone’s flashlight and use it to scan around the room—air conditioner vents, wall decorations, table lamps, power outlets, etc.

When will your phone reveal a hidden camera? The camera lens has a curved surface. Even though modern hidden cameras are tiny, the curvature of the lens reflects a small point of light when illuminated. If you scan the area with your phone, you may see this tiny reflected light—that’s where the hidden camera is.

Check the bathroom

After checking the main room, don’t forget to inspect the bathroom as well. If you discover a camera, report it immediately to the hotel staff and call the police.

Additional safety tips

You should also pay attention to your personal safety. First, choose reputable hotels. Second, before sleeping, make sure all doors and windows are securely locked. You can place an object like a cup on the door handle—if someone tries to open the door from the outside, the cup will fall and make a loud noise to alert you. Finally, keep valuable items with you to avoid loss.
