Eggs should not be stored in the refrigerator door
Refrigerator manufacturers often design compartments in the door to store eggs, leading many people to believe this is the ideal place for them. However, food and nutrition experts argue that the refrigerator door is actually one of the worst places to store eggs, according to Daily Mail.
Vlatka Lake, the business director of Space Station, a company specializing in food preservation, explains that the refrigerator door is the area with the most unstable temperature, with frequent fluctuations due to the door opening and closing. Storing eggs in this location makes them more prone to spoilage.
Additionally, the constant opening and closing of the door exerts a force on the door, causing the eggs to shake and reducing their quality.
Dr. Tạ Tùng Duy, a physician at the Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine, explained in an interview with Vietnamnet that although the refrigerator door is a common place to store eggs, the temperature in this area changes with every opening and closing of the door. This creates an environment where bacteria can easily grow and weaken the egg's protective shell, increasing the risk of contamination and causing the eggs to spoil faster.
The best way to store eggs is to place them in dedicated trays or containers with lids to prevent them from absorbing odors or flavors from other foods in the refrigerator. It is recommended to store the tray or egg box in the middle or deeper areas of the refrigerator, where the temperature remains consistently below 20°C.
Dr. Duy emphasizes that storing eggs in the refrigerator is much better than leaving them outside. Many studies show that fresh eggs stored at room temperature lose quality after a few days and should be used within 1-3 weeks.
On the other hand, eggs stored in the refrigerator will maintain their quality and freshness much longer, at least twice as long as those kept at room temperature. However, experts recommend that the maximum storage time for eggs is 3-5 weeks to avoid using eggs that are too old.
