3 Types of Coffee Proven to Boost Longevity and Lower the Risk of Heart Disease and Stroke
Drinking coffee can be an effective way to increase life expectancy — as long as you choose the right type and consume it in moderation.
Many studies have highlighted the health benefits of coffee, including its potential to extend lifespan. One study published in The European Journal of Preventive Cardiology found that drinking coffee daily can significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and early death from all causes.
Three Types of Coffee Linked to Longer Lifespan
According to Peter Kistler, Head of Cardiac Electrophysiology Research at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute (Australia), three types of coffee offer these protective benefits:
-
Ground coffee with caffeine
-
Instant coffee with caffeine
-
Decaffeinated coffee
“Regular, moderate consumption of these three types of coffee can be considered part of a healthy lifestyle,” Dr. Kistler explained.
The study analyzed health data from nearly 450,000 adults in the UK Biobank. All participants were free of arrhythmias and cardiovascular disease at the start. They were divided into four groups:
-
ground coffee drinkers (caffeinated),
-
decaf coffee drinkers,
-
instant coffee drinkers (caffeinated),
-
and people who did not drink coffee.
After an average follow-up of 12.5 years, researchers reviewed medical records and death reports. Those who regularly drank any of the three types of coffee had a lower risk of early death compared to non-coffee drinkers:
-
Ground coffee: 27% lower risk
-
Decaf coffee: 14% lower risk
-
Instant coffee: 11% lower risk
The most beneficial intake was 2–3 cups per day.
These groups also had reduced risk of heart disease and stroke:
-
Ground coffee: 20% lower risk
-
Decaf coffee: 6% lower risk
-
Instant coffee: 9% lower risk
Important Notes for Coffee Drinkers
Coffee contains more than 100 biologically active compounds, with caffeine being the most well-known. These natural compounds contribute to its positive health effects. However:
-
Adding sugar, cream, milk, or sweeteners can reduce its health benefits.
-
Brewing methods matter: coffee contains cafestol, a compound that can raise LDL (“bad”) cholesterol.
-
Using paper filters can significantly reduce cafestol levels.
