3 Ways to Prevent Snakes from Entering Your Home – Everyone Should Know to Protect Their Family

Snakes, despite their poor eyesight, have an extremely sharp sense of smell and can move quickly. They sometimes approach human living spaces in search of food, water, or shelter. For many families, especially those with gardens and dense vegetation, snakes are an unwelcome and frightening presence.

While some snakes are harmless, others are venomous, and all can pose risks if they come into close contact with people. Hot and dry weather, abundant shade, or easy access to prey such as rodents, poultry, or pets can all attract snakes. Even fragrant plants that bring birds and mice into your yard may unintentionally lure snakes looking for food.

To protect your home and family, here are three traditional and practical methods you can apply.

1. Plant Snake-Repelling Vegetation

Certain plants release strong scents that snakes dislike. Families can grow species such as garlic vine (Mansoa alliacea), lemongrass, or wild garlic bulbs around fences, entryways, and gardens. Snakes, with their sensitive sense of smell, are less likely to enter areas filled with these odors.

For example, lemongrass is widely believed to repel not only mosquitoes and flies but also snakes. Bundles of crushed lemongrass can even be placed at doors or windows to discourage snakes from slipping inside.

Beyond protection, these plants also add greenery and freshness to the home environment. However, it is important to remember that this method only reduces risk — it does not eliminate snakes completely. Families should still keep their surroundings tidy and avoid clutter where snakes could hide.

2. Use Realgar Powder (Arsenic Sulfide)

Realgar powder, known for its strong odor and bright yellow color, has traditionally been used as a snake deterrent. Sprinkling it along pathways, fences, or around the house may help keep snakes away.

Caution is essential, as realgar is toxic to humans and animals. Always wear gloves and a mask when handling it, and avoid contamination of food or water sources. After use, thoroughly clean the area to prevent accidental exposure. This method can be effective, but it should be used carefully and only when necessary.

3. Keep Dogs or Cats

Snakes are naturally wary of dogs and cats. Having pets not only helps scare snakes away but also reduces the rodent population, which is a primary food source for snakes. In addition, dogs and cats, with their sharp senses, may detect the presence of a snake early and alert the household.
