Six months later, he contacted Hannah.

Daniel still remembered Hannah’s face when she read the email.

The adoption process lasted almost a year.
He signed consent.

Daniel became Sophie’s father legally when she was three years and ten months old.
After the hearing, Luke disappeared again.
Until Sophie was four.
That was when he showed up at her preschool.
He had no authorization.
He told a substitute teacher he was her father.
He almost got Sophie into his vehicle.

Daniel had arrived six minutes later.
He remembered Sophie sitting in Rebecca’s patrol car eating crackers while Hannah screamed at Luke across the parking lot.

At seven the next morning, Rebecca called.
“Do not take Sophie to school.”
Daniel sat up.
“What happened?”
“We found Luke.”
“Where?”
“New Jersey.”
Daniel’s entire body went cold.
“What?”
“He checked into a motel fourteen miles from you three days ago.”
“How do you know?”
“Caleb told us.”
Daniel looked toward Sophie’s bedroom.
“He knew.”
“Yes.”
“He knew Luke was here yesterday?”
“Yes.”
Rebecca sounded furious now.
“Caleb says Luke contacted him last month.”
“And?”
“They met twice.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“What did Luke tell him?”
“That Hannah intended to revoke the adoption before she died.”
“That’s a lie.”
“I know.”
“He has proof?”
“A letter.”
Daniel frowned.
“What letter?”
“Something supposedly written by Hannah.”
Daniel was silent.
Rebecca continued.
“Caleb showed me a photograph.”
