The interview lasted ninety minutes.

Afterward she turned off the recorder.

Caleb stood.

“Thank you.”

“For what?” she asked.

“For asking.”

Sophie shrugged.

“My dad says questions are cheaper than assumptions.”

Daniel frowned.

“I have never said that.”

“You should have.”

Caleb laughed.

Same family laugh.

Sophie smiled.

This time Daniel did not feel threatened by it.

There was room.

That was perhaps the lesson he had spent sixteen years learning.

Family was not a chair someone else could occupy only by forcing you out.

Hannah had loved Luke once.

That did not reduce her love for Daniel.

Luke’s biology did not reduce Daniel’s fatherhood.

Caleb’s relation to Sophie did not grant him authority over her.

Carol’s mistakes did not erase the possibility of becoming a grandmother later.

Relationships were not interchangeable.

Neither were titles.

Daniel had earned Dad one breakfast, fever, school pickup, nightmare, birthday, argument, and ordinary Tuesday at a time.

No DNA result could manufacture those years.

No court paper could erase them.

No police officer could revoke them on a snowy curb.

Sophie graduated high school in June.

The ceremony took place on the football field beneath a brutally hot New Jersey sun.

Daniel arrived two hours early.

Naturally.

Rebecca came.

Now deputy chief.

Carol came.

Luke came, sitting three rows behind Daniel because he had asked where Daniel preferred him.

Daniel had answered, “Anywhere Sophie assigned.”

She had assigned seats herself.

Caleb did not attend.

His choice.

He said graduation belonged to the people who had actually been part of Sophie’s daily life.

Sophie appreciated that.

When her name was called, Daniel stood before anyone else.

“SOPHIE COLE!”

She crossed the stage.

Red hair blazing beneath the sun.

Diploma case in hand.

She looked toward the crowd.

Found Daniel.

Smiled.

Luke stood too.

Daniel noticed.

For one second old insecurity returned.

Then disappeared.

Sophie could be celebrated by more than one person.

Afterward families crowded the field.

Sophie found Daniel first.

She threw her arms around him.

“I did it.”

“You barely.”

“I have honors.”

“Administrative error.”

She laughed.

Then Luke approached.

“Congratulations.”

Sophie hugged him.

Different hug.

Daniel could tell.

He wondered whether that distinction existed only because he needed it to.

Then decided it did not matter.

Rebecca appeared with flowers.

Carol with a camera.

Everyone began talking at once.

Sophie looked around.

“Stop.”

They did.

“I want a picture.”

Daniel started to step aside.

“With everybody.”

He stopped.

Sophie arranged them.

Daniel on one side.

Luke on the other.

Carol.

Rebecca.

Then she frowned.

“Someone’s missing.”
