“What?”

“At the bus stop.”

Sophie’s eyes filled.

“I remember Officer Mercer telling you to let go of me.”

Daniel swallowed.

“You were squeezing the life out of me.”

“I was seven.”

“You were powerful.”

She smiled.

Then became serious.

“You didn’t.”

“No.”

“Even when he put his hand near his belt.”

Daniel remembered.

The cold.

Sophie shaking.

His own fear hidden behind anger.

“I was scared.”

“I know that now.”

“I didn’t then.”

“Good.”

“Why?”

“Kids shouldn’t have to know when their parents are terrified.”

Daniel laughed softly.

“Hannah would disagree.”

“She told me you were afraid of spiders.”

“That woman betrayed me after death.”

Sophie laughed through tears.

Daniel held her carefully.

Not tightly.

That distinction had become meaningful.

Around them, the reception continued.

People talked.

Glasses clinked.

Music played.

Luke watched from a respectful distance.

Caleb stood beside Rebecca.

No uniforms.

No authority.

Just people.

When the song ended, Sophie kissed Daniel’s cheek.

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

She walked toward her husband.

Daniel remained where he was for a moment.

Then Rebecca came beside him.

“Still think I shouldn’t have been riding that bus?”

Daniel smiled.

Years earlier he had teased her about school-route duty.

Called it a waste of a sergeant.

“You saved us.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I corrected one officer.”

She nodded toward Sophie.

“You two already knew who you were.”

Daniel followed her gaze.

Sophie was laughing.

Red hair pinned loosely above her shoulders.

Hannah’s necklace around her throat.

A small photograph of her mother tucked into her bouquet.

Luke’s eyes.

Daniel’s terrible habit of talking with his hands.

Carol’s stubbornness.

Maybe some of Caleb’s caution now too.

Pieces from many people.

None owning the whole.

Rebecca continued.

“Caleb’s mistake wasn’t asking whether you were her legal father.”

Daniel looked at her.

“It was deciding the answer before he asked.”

Daniel nodded.

That was it.

So much damage began there.

A conclusion first.

Facts later.

Luke decided Daniel had stolen Sophie.

Then built a letter to support it.

Caleb decided his brother had been wronged.

Then used authority to support it.

Carol decided protecting Luke meant keeping Hannah’s letters hidden.

Then spent years interpreting every new event through the secret she was afraid to confront.

Daniel had made assumptions too.

He once assumed Sophie knowing Luke would threaten his place.

It did not.

He once assumed allowing Carol into their life would disrespect Hannah.

It did not.
