Culvin heard them before he saw them. The synchronized footfall of armored operators who moved like a single organism. And then the laser sights appeared, cutting through the concrete dust and the acrid smoke of the breach charge.

And every single one of them was centered on him.

"Federal agents! Drop the weapon! Drop it right now! Hands! Show me your hands!"

The voice came from directly in front of Culvin, and it was not a voice that invited negotiation.

It belonged to the lead operator of the HRT advance element, a man in full ballistic gear whose face was entirely hidden behind a dark visor. And he was close. Much closer than Culvin had expected, because he had materialized from a shadow that Culvin had not registered as an entry point.

Culvin's Glock was still in his hand.

He looked at the lasers. He counted them involuntarily, the way a person counts lanes of traffic before stepping off a curb. Six. Seven. More behind the lead operator. All of them painting him.

His gun hand began to shake.

"I'm a cop," he said. The words came out thinner than he intended. "I'm Detroit PD. I made an arrest. I have a suspect on the ground. I'm on your side."

"Drop the weapon, and it will remain on your side," the lead operator said. "This is the last time I am going to say it."

Culvin released the Glock. It clattered on the concrete.

Three operators were on him before the echo finished. Not roughly, but with a complete and practiced efficiency that stripped him of any remaining illusion of control. He was against the wall, his arms secured behind him, in under two seconds.

He stood there breathing hard, his cheek pressed against the cold steel partition, trying to understand how the evening had inverted itself so completely.

Renata Baines walked into the corridor 45 seconds after the breach, her dark field jacket over the same charcoal blazer she had been wearing in the van.

She walked directly to Harmon, who had been helped to his feet by a medic and was rotating his wrists where the handcuffs had bitten. She examined the bruising without touching it, her expression containing a precise quantity of controlled anger.

"Are you hurt?"

"No," Harmon said. "Wire's gone. I had about four minutes of useful collection after he entered before he pulled it."

"We got it from the van feeds," Baines said. "Everything is documented."

"The ledgers are still in place. Exactly where I left them."

Baines nodded. She turned toward Culvin.

Culvin watched her walk toward him. And something in the deliberate quality of her movement, the absence of hurry, the absolute self-possession, made something in his chest contract. She was not what he had imagined when he thought of federal supervisors.

She stopped in front of him and regarded him with an expression that wasn't contempt and wasn't pity, but occupied the cold territory between both.
