Breaking: Mike Tomlin steps down as Steelers head coach

Mike Tomlin has officially stepped down as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, bringing an end to one of the most remarkable coaching tenures in franchise history.

“After a historic 19-season run in Pittsburgh, Mike Tomlin just informed his team that he is stepping down as the Steelers head coach,” Schefter reported. “The Steelers now will be searching for only their fourth head coach since 1969.” The news was first shared by Schefter alongside fellow ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler, highlighting the rarity of coaching changes within the Steelers organization.

Tomlin’s departure comes shortly after the Steelers concluded the 2025 NFL season with a decisive 30–6 loss to the Houston Texans. That defeat marked Tomlin’s seventh consecutive playoff loss as a head coach, tying former Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis for the most in NFL history. Despite consistent regular-season success, the Steelers have not secured a playoff victory since the 2016 season, a drought that increasingly drew scrutiny in recent years.

Hired in 2007 following the retirement of legendary coach Bill Cowher, Tomlin quickly established himself as one of the league’s premier leaders. He guided Pittsburgh to a victory in Super Bowl XLIII and later returned to the championship stage in Super Bowl XLV, where the Steelers fell to Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. Throughout his tenure, Tomlin was widely respected for his leadership, defensive-minded philosophy, and ability to keep the team competitive year after year.

At the time of his resignation, Tomlin was the longest-tenured head coach in the NFL, a testament to both his consistency and the Steelers’ commitment to organizational stability. As Pittsburgh begins its search for a new head coach, the franchise faces a pivotal moment, tasked with honoring Tomlin’s legacy while charting a new path forward in pursuit of postseason success.
