Chloe shook her head. "No, he hasn't. He's my boyfriend."
Dempsey looked back at Austin and then at Chloe with an expression that showed he was not revising his assessment based on what she had just said. "Is he forcing you to say that?"
"No," Chloe said, and the frustration was already audible in her voice. "He is my boyfriend. We go to the same school. We're just hanging out."
Austin kept his voice respectful but firm. "Officer, what seems to be the problem?"
Dempsey's head snapped toward him. "Shut up. You speak when you're spoken to."
He paused and looked back at Austin with a certainty that had no evidence behind it. "Now tell me why you're harassing this young lady."
Austin's jaw tightened. "I'm not harassing anybody. Did she say she was being harassed?"
