"I'm 17. I called my dad. I didn't do anything wrong. I don't understand why this is happening."
Chloe followed, still on the phone with the dispatcher, still crying, still telling Dempsey to let him go. Dempsey opened the back door of his cruiser and guided Austin inside. The door closed, and Austin sat in the back seat in handcuffs at 17 years old, having done nothing except reach for his phone. Through the glass, he could still see Chloe near the road, one hand pressed to her ear as she spoke to the dispatcher and the other gesturing helplessly toward the cruiser. The scene had become almost surreal in its ordinariness: park lights, passing cars, people in the distance, and a teenager locked in a police vehicle because an officer had decided a phone might be a weapon despite the person standing beside Austin saying exactly what it was.
Chloe stood at the edge of the road and kept talking to the dispatcher. Her voice had the particular quality of someone trying very hard to stay functional in a situation that was making that difficult. Several minutes passed. Then another cruiser came around the bend and pulled up behind Dempsey's vehicle.
Two officers got out of the second cruiser and approached the scene. The first thing they saw was Chloe standing at the edge of the road with tears running down her face and her phone still in her hand. Through the window, they could see Austin sitting in the back of Dempsey's cruiser in handcuffs.
Officer James Kowalski, the senior of the two, looked at Dempsey and asked him directly what had happened. Dempsey's explanation started in the middle and could not find its way to a beginning or an end. He said Austin had been harassing the girl. He said Austin had reached for a weapon. He said the girl was in danger.
But the words came out in the wrong order and kept contradicting one another. Kowalski stood there listening with the expression of someone trying to follow a map that did not match the road in front of him.
Chloe stepped forward before Kowalski had finished trying to make sense of Dempsey's account. She told them exactly what had happened from the moment Dempsey pulled up. She told them Austin was her boyfriend, that they had been hanging out in the park doing nothing wrong, and that Dempsey had approached and accused Austin of harassing her despite her telling him multiple times that Austin was her boyfriend. Then, when Austin said he was calling his father and reached for his phone, Dempsey had tackled him and handcuffed him.
