Bikers Knocked Away an Old Marine’s Cane at a Gas Station — Then a Retired Colonel Revealed Who He Really Was
The letter arrived on a Tuesday, carried into the morning room on a silver tray that did nothing to soften the blow it contained. Alina Thornfield watched her father's hand tremble as he passed it across the mahogany desk, and she knew before her fingers touched the heavy paper that the world she had carefully navigated for two and twenty years had just splintered beneath her feet.

"The Duke of Ashworth has made an offer," Sir Reginald said, his voice thinner than she had ever heard it. "One I cannot refuse. One we cannot refuse."
Alina read the terms in a single dreadful glance. Her father's gambling debts, some so vast she had not allowed herself to imagine their total, would be erased. The Thornfield estate would remain intact. Her mother would keep her jewels, her younger brothers their education. All of it, every thread of their unraveling dignity, would be stitched back together by a single binding condition.
She was to become the Duchess of Ashworth.
The name conjured an immediate, humiliating litany. The ton called him the Gay Duke, and the epithet, once a harmless description of his dazzling spirits, had curdled into something crueler. Alexander Ashworth danced like a flame through every ballroom, laughed too loudly at his own jests, draped himself in waistcoats of impossible hues, and surrounded himself with a coterie of elegant young men who called him Ash and shared his boxes at the opera.
No mistress had ever been linked to his name. No whispered scandal involved a chambermaid or an indiscreet widow. Society had drawn its own conclusions and, as society always did, congratulated itself on its own sharpness.
"They say he has no interest in women," Alina said quietly, laying the letter down. Her tone was steady, the same measured cadence she had learned from years of watching her mother manage a household on borrowed time.
Her father could not meet her eyes. "They say many things."
"They say he requires a duchess only as a screen."
She had overheard her maid, Sally, use that very word only last week, whispering with the cook about the Duke of Ashworth's rumored preferences. A beard, Sally had called it, giggling behind her hand until she noticed Alina in the doorway and fell silent.
Sir Reginald's shoulders sagged. "Alina, I have no defense. I have gambled away every chance you had at a different future. If I could undo it—"
"You cannot." She rose, smoothing her muslin skirts with automatic grace. "No one can. I shall marry the Duke and our family shall be saved. Let us speak of it no more."
She left the room before her composure could fail her, passing through the narrow corridor to the garden door. The small walled garden behind the townhouse was brown and bare, November's chill having stripped the rose bushes to thorn. Alina stood among them, her breath misting the air, and let herself feel the full weight of what she had agreed to.
A marriage without affection she could have borne. A marriage of convenience was the common lot of women in her position. But a marriage that would make her a figure of pity and low mockery, that required a different sort of armor.
She would be the duchess who existed to be politely ignored, whose husband would dance attendance on his gentleman friends while she sat alone in country drawing rooms, growing old and invisible. She thought of the whispered laughter that would follow her down every ballroom. She thought of the wedding night that would never come. She thought of a lifetime of silent dinners and separate bedchambers, and her throat closed tight.
When she returned inside, Sally was waiting with the post and a pinched expression that told Alina the servants already knew. News of the betrothal would spread through London before nightfall. By morning, it would be in every gossip's mouth from Mayfair to St. James's.
Alina dismissed the maid and sat at her writing desk, though she had no letters to write. She simply needed to occupy her hands. Her mother would weep when she heard the news properly confirmed. Her brothers, away at school, would write stiff, uncertain letters. And she, Alina Thornfield, would walk into the arms of a man who wanted nothing from her except the illusion she could provide.
A soft knock came at the door. Sally entered again, clutching a velvet box. "From His Grace, miss, delivered by his own footman."
Alina opened the box with nerveless fingers. Inside lay a ring, an emerald of deep, liquid green set in gold that gleamed with quiet, serious richness. It was not a frivolous stone. It was not the choice of a man who favored gaudy display. She stared at it, a cold thread of confusion winding through her resignation.
She slipped the ring onto her finger. It fit as though it had been measured. The hook had been set, the line drawn taut. Alina Thornfield was to marry a puzzle dressed in peacock feathers, and every instinct she possessed warned her that the surface was a careful lie. Whether the truth beneath was better or worse, she could not yet guess, but she would learn. She would have a lifetime to learn.
Part Two
The garden party was held at Lady Hampstead's Richmond villa, a sprawling affair of clipped hedges and ornamental ponds designed to showcase the spring blooms and the marriageable young women. Alina arrived with her mother, who clutched her arm as though she might bolt, and walked the gravel paths with the rigid posture of a woman approaching a scaffold.
The Duke of Ashworth was late, as befitting a man who treated punctuality as a provincial concern. When he did arrive, he came in a swirl of laughter and expensive cologne, a peacock-blue coat straining over broad shoulders, his cravat tied in an elaborate waterfall that drew every eye.
Two young gentlemen flanked him, Lord Cedric Hale and Mr. Percival Dent, known dandies both, and the three of them seemed to carry their own private sunshine, chattering and jesting as though the assembled company existed only as their audience.
Alina watched him from across the lawn, her gloved hands folded before her. She had resolved to observe before she engaged, to learn the contours of the performance before she was forced to step onto the stage. For a performance it plainly was. No man could sustain such relentless high spirits without effort. She noted the way his laughter never quite lingered, the way his gaze swept the crowd with a watchfulness that belied his insouciance.
Lady Hampstead affected the introduction with the brittle cheerfulness of a woman hosting a drama she did not fully understand. "Your Grace, may I present Miss Thornfield? Miss Thornfield, the Duke of Ashworth."
He turned to her, and for half a second his eyes, a gray that held no merriment, met hers with an intensity that seized the breath in her lungs. Then the mask snapped back into place. He swept a bow so florid it bordered on mockery.
"Miss Thornfield, the jewel of the hour. I do hope you are prepared for a life of unremitting tedium, for I am told marriage is precisely that." He grinned, and the gentlemen behind him tittered.
Alina dipped a curtsy of flawless precision. "I have always found tedium to be largely a matter of one's own resources, Your Grace. I shall endeavor not to bore you."
